Robert Riley Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 So many chatterbaits to pick from on TW these days, I've run out and have no idea what brand they were. What do you guys use? And any that you swear against? Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 I make my own, but if I were looking to buy some it would be D&M Custom Baits' Piranha Beast and Zman's Project Z chatterbait. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 26, 2015 Global Moderator Posted March 26, 2015 I make my own and have been very happy with them. The new Project Z chatterbaits are very nice baits though. The baits like the Zman chatterbaits have a much faster wiggle because the blade has a smaller range of movement while the baits that are attached by a split ring have a slower vibration and tend to hunt as well as the blade swings much wider side to side. Both have their benefits. 2 Quote
Robert Riley Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 hm that's interesting. I think I'll buy a few from Zman and D&M. I'll probly add a craw or a swing impact. What size trailer would you use? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 26, 2015 Super User Posted March 26, 2015 The new Project Z Chatterbait is an improvement on the original, but the original is VERY effective! Mike at Siebert Outdoors offers his Fogy http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/Fogy_c20.htm Rage Tail has the Rage Blade:http://www.basspro.com/Strike-King-Tour-Grade-Rage-Blade-Swim-Jig/product/1306290611017/#desc-tab I also fish the Wobble Head from Bluebasser86. What size trailer would you use? I fish a Havoc Pitboss or Rage Menace rigged sideways, 2/3 of a 5" senko, 1/2 a trick worm, Havoc Grass Pig Jr. I'm playing with the Zman Diesel MinnowZ right now and really like them so far. Also have some of their Turbo CrawZ that I'm going to try once the water warms up a little more. When I rig the Pitboss I cut the top segment off, so it looks like this when rigged. The fish seem to approve of that rigging though! 1 Quote
Robert Riley Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 Those looks good, never thought about a PitBoss... I'll have to try that. I like the color scheme you got! I mostly night fish with them, so it's white on white or black on black. Quote

These are some of my most successful colors. and I'm hoping that this one will contribute to my night fishing efforts this year as well. 2 Quote
Robert Riley Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 That black and yellowish looks interesting. I have Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted March 26, 2015 Super User Posted March 26, 2015 PM Bluebasser. His are phenomenal and I have used a some of the brands on TW. Quote
Brnnoser6983 Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 I just bought some D&M's and I am happy over the quality. I was not happy over the original Z-Mans and since refused to buy them. I will try the new line and give them a second chance. 1 Quote

A KGB Operative Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I heard a berkley devilspear was a fantastic option, anyone try? As a trailer? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 27, 2015 Global Moderator Posted March 27, 2015 Wow I like that head design on your chatterbaits. Is it more flat than round? Yes, it's a swim jig head so it's more slender than most. Quote
Trek Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Yes, it's a swim jig head so it's more slender than most. Is there a reason for the swim jig mold ? Or is it just the mold you have with the eye of the hook being that way ? Quote
primetime Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Those jigs in the picture are awesome and the swing design that they are made with helps your landing percentage, and I find that I lose too many fish on the original ZMAN Chatterbaits. The extra bend in the blade that you see in the picture creates a much different bait compared to standard bladed jigs.... I love throwing Chatterbaits to cover water and they are much more weedless than a spinnerbait and have pretty much replaced the spinnerbait for me most of the time, and I find I lose to many fish on the original ZMan versions, and also if I use a trailer that is too bulky or creates too much action fish will often miss it but they also give their location away so I always have a plastic follow up bait since many fish will swirl or miss a chatterbait if fishing them fast like I enjoy doing. Custom jigs hold up better as well imo, but to be fair I have not used the newer models however from D&M etc. which I am sure are better but I like the free swinging versions shown above for many reasons. Brnnoser6983 Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 I have a couple more in mind that I would like to try, but I guess money is the key factor, and I have been spending way too much Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 28, 2015 Global Moderator Posted March 28, 2015 Is there a reason for the swim jig mold ? Or is it just the mold you have with the eye of the hook being that way ? It takes the biggest hook I could get without modifying the mold and I wanted to make swim jigs with it. I think the narrow head gets shoved around by the water a little more during yhr retrieve which enhances the hunting action. Quote

I like that you can glue an eye in on those. I make a 1/2 oz one on a football shaky head. I can put a 6/0 hook in that thing. But I put a bigger swim bait on the back of it and the weight keeps it from flipping on a faster retrieve. It's a good fall bait. Quote
