For some reason my 50E Curado's anti-reverse has begun working off and on, mostly during the cast. After I nearly smacked myself in the back of the head with a Shadow Rap last Thursday I put it away and haven't used it since. Is it my anti reverse pawl or what could be causing this issue? Basically, when I attempt to make a cast it will slip for a a short distance, sometimes up to 2' though, before the spool stops again. It's a big issue because it's on a 6' 2" jerkbait rod so if it slips a foot I have a bunch of treble hooks screaming past my ear on the cast.

I had that happen once on a Curado. Turns out over time some grease and oil had made its way into the sleeve that the AR bearing assembly was in. I took it out, degreased it and made sure no oil/grease was on the AR bearing assembly itself and it went away. The AR bearing assembly was able to just slightly slip itself within the sleeve, which was causing the slippage.

Might be the issue, might not, but it's worth checking out either way. I just know mine was doing the same thing, slipping just a couple feet, and that's what it was.

X2 Had this happen on one of my reels a while ago. If it gets some grease or gunk in there it can really mess it up. If that's all it is, it's an easy fix.

I don't understand the casting piece. A dirty AR may slip intermittently but locking up on a cast is unusual. If you're uncomfortable with opening the reel or don't want to mess with it feel free to send it in. If you DIY and have any questions you can get me here or call.

If its happening on the cast it seems like the AR bearing wouldnt cause that. Is it happening during free spool? If so is the clutch bar reengaging? My father has an older abu garcia that does that once and a while.

What DVT said. It coul be the the pawl, it could be the spool release re-engaging or a week spring. Get it to a pro if you can't figure it out yourself.

It's not locking up during the cast. I'm going back to cast and the reel is giving line, usually right as my rod is getting to max load as I start moving the rod back forward is when my anti reverse decides to stop working and give a bit of line.

That makes sense about the possibility of some grease or dirt getting into the assembly. I'll see if I can clean it out and get it working properly, if not it'll probably be headed your way.

When you cast your thumb is holding the spool and the reel should be free to spin either way. Are you saying you keep the reel locked and push the button at the right point in the cast?

This wouldn't be good either. It will chew up the bottom of the pinion eventually.

The AR clutch should slip right out of the side plate easily. A soak in Perfect Solution or Simple Green and a little hot water, agitate, rinse, repeat. Let dry and reinstall with a light coat of oil swabbed onto the sleeve and you should be back in business. Make sure the roller clutch goes back in right side up or it will spin the wrong direction.
