Tyler j Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I am in the market for some new reels. I have a KVD signature series reel that I am in love with. Today I was looking at the new energy and they seem similar to the KVD. 11 bearings, ACS braking, etc. Now I have a couple quantums and I like them a lot. I was also thinking about trying out a Lews which Ive never used. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance. Quote
fishinphilly Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I've never used a quantum reel but lews reels are great i have 3 for over 2 years and 1 for 1 year and haven't had any problems with them at all, i just clean them once a year i think the energy is like $150, for that i would go with the bb-1, the LFS series, or the tournament MB (don't have this one) goodluck, let me know if you decide to get a lews (you won't regret it) Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I had a smoke and it was a good reel but i think the tournament pro is the better reel. Quote
SDbassin Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 ive never used a quantum reel, but I love my tp, have 4 more on the way Quote
zeth Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I have a slew of Energy and Smoke reels. I have absolutely no reason to use anything else. They have never let me down in any situation. Pros use the energy reels. They are very good. Quote
Tyler j Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 I have confidence in quantum but the 2 reels are very similar Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 25, 2015 Super User Posted March 25, 2015 American Legacy Fishing has a Quantum Smoke 150 right hand retrieve 7.3:1 gear ratio on sale for $99.99, that reel retails for $219.99. I have one and to me the Smoke is the best casting reel Quantum has ever made. I have a Lews TP but I feel the Smoke is better, well the 150 is better, the TP may edge out the Smoke 100 but to me the Smoke wins just because it uses aluminum side covers with an aluminum frame while the Lews TP uses graphite side covers but it is still a good reel. The new Energy reels are getting a lot of good marks as well but if you are measuring the Energy versus the TP, I would have to get the Lews, the TP is a nice reel with matching performance. Quote
zeth Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Just ge the energy. You wont regret it. I don't like anything with someone elses name printed on it. Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Tournament pro no doubt. IMO it's more like smoke or Exo vs tp. Quote
Cameron211 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I bought the new energy this year. And I love it!! I don't know why people bash quantum but I love the reels. Had a little adjusting to do with the internal brakes. Glenn and and another member helped me on that and it casts like a dream. You will not be disappointed. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted March 25, 2015 Super User Posted March 25, 2015 tournament pro. getting another one soon Quote
Rich in Co Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 never used an Energy so put me down in the TP camp Quote
SenkoGuru Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 All total I own 14 Lew's and only two Quantum's. I've just never really liked Quantum reels but that sale that smalljaw67 was talking about had me interested so I ordered a Smoke 150. Should be here in a few days and I'll let everyone know what I think about it. I don't think you should go to a different reel though if you are really happy with the Quantum's you already have, then I would just stay with them. Quote
kikstand454 Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 You can count on both to be quality reels. That's not really the issue. What you should do is handle them both, place them both on the rod that you plan to use them on and weigh in any other bells and whistles you may like. Then choose the right reel for you. Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 My baitcasters have always been Quantums, from the Pro 2 in the early 90's to the Energy PT's the last couple of years. My next one will be the Smoke PT and I expect it to be as solid and trouble free as all of them have been. Quantum has never given me a reason to want something else. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 30, 2015 Super User Posted March 30, 2015 I have No experience with the rods or Reels in the Quantum Smoke line. All my Quantum rods & reels are from the Tour PT line. I don't have anything against the Smoke stuff, it's just that they came out after I'd already stocked up on these and I don't need anything else. This is my favorite and I have a bunch A-Jay Quote
