So this season I decided I wanted to learn to use a baitcaster.  Today at lunch I ran to a local pond just to practice casting from the dock.  I had been using a lipless crank with no hooks for yard practice, but decided at the last minute I should throw the hooks back on while I am at the pond.  So glad I did...

I caught this beast after clearing a birds nest.  Biggest bass I have seen in person to date.  Of course as luck would have it I didn't have a tape measure or scale with me.  We estimate the length somewhere near 24".  The weight was like nothing I had held before.  The best part is I caught it out of a pond that pretty much everyone says doesn't hold enough bass to make it worth it.

Gotta love those happy accidents!

Certainly not a 10. Good healthy fish nonetheless. Hard to guess a weight because of the angle. Lips and jaw aren't huge though. Unless of course you have huge hands.

Yeah I don't know about 10 pounds as much as I would like it to have weighed that much.  Conservatively I would say 7 pounds though.  I actually gave it to some other guys that were there fishing.  It is taking every ounce of my will not to bail out of work and head back with a scale to find out.

You gave it away??

its his right not to return it to the water, if im not getting a skin mount of it, i wouldve put it back myself personally. especially in a pond not known for a decent bass population. but its his fish, his choice. and i will not criticize or question what he chooses to do with his fish....

Congrats on the PB! I've never caught anything over 3 pounds, but I am happy to be out on the water most times, anyways.

You gave away your PB to another guy? Dang... lol I would have probably put it back. If it was a double digit bass..... well then, it would be a completely different matter.

I think not returning bigger fish to the water is just foolishness.  Yep, his right. But short sighted and foolish.  It's peoples right to act like a d*ck each day too, doesn't mean I support it...(and that was not directed toward OP...his probably a great guy).

If you are ever caught without a tape or a scale, clip a piece of line the length of the bass and take it home to measure. You can do the same thing to get the girth (then you can get a reasonable estimate of what the weight would have been).

I catch much nicer fish when I don't have a scale or tape on me. They all become 12" and skinny when I'm prepared to weigh and measure a fish.

I have a similar situation with a different device.

Over the past few years, I have caught a lot of catfish that grabbed my lures while bass fishing, including five that topped 10 lbs.  I got tired of wrestling them into the boat, once they get over 5 lbs their head isn't as easy to grip, their sandpaper teeth draw blood and they are pretty strong.  I prefer not to carry/use a net, so I got myself a BPS gripmaster last fall to make landing these slimy beasts a bit easier.  I keep it handy, with my pliers & line cutter just off to the side when out fishing on my boat.

In the six months I have had it, only 2 catfish over 5 lbs have come to the boat...

I wouldn't consider carrying a scale or tape with me, I just don't care about PB and I don't fish tournaments.  In my personal ponds I put all fish back, from public canals, I'd give any fish away to some one in need.

You should have released the fish. Maybe the next time you catch it, it will be even bigger. If not, give someone else a catch to experience the feeling of catching a PB. I'm not sure, but that fish might be full of eggs and by releasing it, it will allow the fish to spawn and make babies. Keep the gene pool going and populate a pond people say doesn't hold bass.

BTW, you could have measured the fish with basically anything. Your rod, shoes, etc then go home and see how long it was.
