Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted March 23, 2015 Super User Posted March 23, 2015 Excluding presentation and bait selection. Which do you feel is the most important component to your fishing set up? Don't over think the question. I go with all three personally. I feel that when utilizing the proper equipment and line. Everything meshes perfectly and increases hook up ratio and what have you. Better feel provided by the rod and line. Better retrieve power provided by the reel. Then again I have also been out fished by an old man with an ugly stick and a Zebco 33 before too. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 23, 2015 Super User Posted March 23, 2015 I'm going with OPEN WATER ! ! ! A-Jay 1 Quote
Sonik Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 All of the above is the easy, safe answer. I think for the average bass fisherman, a decent reel is the best investment. A guy can get by with a Berkley Cherrywood pretty well depending on the lure but if he's throwing it with a $10 Walmart reel that has no drag or busts on the first trip, that's unacceptable. And plenty of good bass fishermen on here use cheap Big Game. I think the most intricate, moving, mechanical piece is the reel (duh) and if it's junk, there's nothing you can do about it and it ruins the whole game. A $20 rod and $3 line will work fine for a lot of things. 1 Quote
Fishinthefish Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Personally I don't feel like line is as important mechnically and over all as I hype it up in my own mind. I think a reel is super important because of getting the kure where it needs to go. But a rod for those super soft mush bites is hugely important so I have to vote 1 and 2. Id I had to settle for one of them it'd be the rod over the reel though. Quote
Penguino Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 It all depends on the application. For motion baits like cranks and traps, I would want a better reel. But likewise, on jigs and senisitivy baits, I would want a good, sensitive rod. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted March 23, 2015 Super User Posted March 23, 2015 Raider I think your lost, the "everything else" section is down a bit further... Oh wait? This thread is actually about fishing! 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 24, 2015 Super User Posted March 24, 2015 If I had to chose one, it would be the rod. It communicates what is going on more so than anything else. But in the end, it would be all of the above. They are all important. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted March 24, 2015 Super User Posted March 24, 2015 I went with one and three, reason in a pinch on budget there are several good reels around the $100 range. Reels are also the easiest to score for a discount. So for the budget minded angler put the money where it will improve your fishing. At the end of the day its he rod and line that affect sensitivity, backbone, casting accuracy, etc. The reel takes up line, not to say it's unimportant but I know with some patience I can score a high dollar reel at a deep discount. This year alone I've purchased about 3 reels nib the lowest retail cost was $100, highest north of $250, I've paid about $125. So I guess I'm saying you can get quality on a budget, reels are the easiest to get. 1 Quote
gr8outdoorz Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 All are equally important...a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. 1 Quote
CRANKENSTIEN Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I have had lines that make quality rods and reels perform poorly. They all are important. Equally ?? Quote
Kevin22 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Line and rod. Reel is not important to me because I mostly target cast at short distances. Quote
SenkoGuru Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I have always been of the mindset that if I had say $250 to spend on a combo I would spent $200 on the rod and $50 on the reel. the rod just seems to be VERY important in my book. I will also add that the only thing between you and the fish is the line, so use quality line too. Rod & Line are more important. I may be the only guy here who would buy a Megabass rod and stick an H2o Mettle on it until I could buy a better reel. 1 Quote

Flukeman Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Line trumps all. You take some bad line that is stiff and has severe memory problems and it will ruin any rod/reels ability to provide an enjoyable day. Or if you have good line in poor condition, makes it really hard to land a fish no matter how nice your $300 rod or reel is. If I am tournament fishing and there is money on the line I'd like all three to be quality. Of course I have won a lot of money with a technique I use with an ugly stick. If I am just fun fishing the line is the most important to me. I've caught a good number of 4lb bass on old graphite and fiberglass rods with a zebco 33 stuck on them. When I visit the normal people who live on the water (people who don't follow fishing websites ) it is amazing to me what they consider fishing equipment. Funny thing is, we always have a blast with their equipment as long as the line is manageable. Quote
tracker01 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Rod for me. If I do not feel that "Tick", the rest just sits there idling. But I have to say buying reels is much more fun for me. Quote
CRANKENSTIEN Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Bass fishing is a science from the handle on your reel to which bait you put where. It is a challenge and rewarding to get it right. What ever your budget can afford and what works best for you... if your equipment fails you can get your feelings hurt. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted March 25, 2015 Super User Posted March 25, 2015 They are now all important to me. but its all about presentation my first bait caster was a 7.1. used it for everything crank, jigs, top water you name it. I still caught fish . Later I realized that each turn of the handle was cranking so much line, even if I was reeling slow. So with presentations that I wanted to fish slower, it was still very fast. I have now learned my lesson haha and have been using the right reel for the things I want to do. Rod always used a 7 foot medium heavy. which will get the job done. But I have found different rods that I like for specific applications. line same thing I use fluro, mono , and braid all for different presentations. 1 Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Reel for me. Even though I usually spend more on the rod Quote
