kschultz76 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Breaking news the JDM Bait Monkey was sighted on my back tonight as I placed my first order from Japan Lure Shop. I've been hemming and hawing about picking up another reel or two for my spare/guests rods and to possibly replace another reel I just can't decide if I like or not. Well I almost bought a Chronarch 201E6 when Cabelas had them on sale. Then the morning I went to place the order using my $20 off rebate they were no longer on sale! Doh! Well tonight I lost the bid on a mint recently serviced Curado 201E7 while I had been spending time the past few days browsing and reading up on JDM options. I lost it with like 2 min left so I decided it was a sign. I just ordered a Scorpion 1001XT, and am pretty psyched. Really hoping that it's smoothness and quality live up to its reputation. I have a stable of 3 Chronarch CI4s, a 2013 Met, a Curado I, a Daiwa T3 1016, and some Pro Quals. Since this will likely be on a rod I won't use myself every time and will be used by friends I wanted something less expensive and simple but still a quality I'd be happy using. Shortly I will be ordering some PGIIs to put on the handle. So do you guys think I made a good first JDM choice? Will it be able to impress compared to my CI4s and Met? And yes another Met or two will be in my future but not something I'd give my ham fisted friends to use. I was very tempted by a 2014 Aldeberan MG7 on eBay for $230 but decided to really stay conservative this time. Wish me luck and point me to the support group newsletter! 1 Quote
stk Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Nice job on the first step of admitting you have a problem. I just got my first jdm this week as well, a scorpion 1001 4x4 svs model. The 1000xt looks pretty sweet as well. I hope you enjoy it. It was a hard purchase for me as I love my chronarch ci4+ for pretty much everything. I'm hoping to use my scorpion to throw light finesse baits. My next problem is aftermarket parts.... Quote
Hogsticker Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 That was my 1st Jdm reel. The rest is history Quote
bootytrain Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Sweet purchase! Once you fish a Shimano 50, you will want more. Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I to just pulled the trigger on my first JDM reel. an Abu Garcia Revo Elite 8-L. Mine is going to be my main reel for plastics, I cant believe youre not going to pawn off a PQ on your guests... if your offering a guest a scorpion I would like to volunteer as trubute!!! 2 Quote

Well let's be honest, saying they're for spare/guest rods was just an excuse to get a new reel I wanted to try. It will likely live on a rod I use at times too and wanted something nicer for it. And I'm still not sure if that T3 will stay in my rotation. Quote
kschultz76 Posted March 27, 2015 Author Posted March 27, 2015 Tracking shows my Scorpion arrived today! Ordered from Japan Lure Shop on Sunday, arrived Friday, that's darn good!! Very excited to get home and check it out. 1 Quote

Recently picked up a used model Scorpion 1001 4x4 SVS model myself. Now if the darn weather would just cooperate. I'd be out today if it was going to be as warm as yesterday, but no such luck. OP, no doubt you will enjoy that reel....as will your guests. Quote
The Budget Fisherman Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 I know how the jdm bait monkey works. I got a alderbaran bfs & next thing you know I want a scorpion 1000xt. And I got to put it on a major craft volkey. The bfs is so much fun, I'm putting it on a phenix 683 recon. With the avail shallow spools they are so versatile. 2 Quote
kschultz76 Posted April 1, 2015 Author Posted April 1, 2015 Got to use the Scorp out on the water a bit this evening and have spent some time pitching indoors as well. After getting it on the water am very happy, casting is effortless with this reel, and dialed where very little thumb is needed to keep things under control. Love the footprint and form factor of the 50 frame, wasn't sure what you guys were talking about all this time, but now I know and I'm sold. Compares very favorably to my Chronarch CI4+ reels. I am afraid I have to order another one before they're not available anymore. I'm gonna be in so much trouble.... Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 1, 2015 Super User Posted April 1, 2015 There ares several key distinctions from the Chronarch and Curado 50e. Most folks right them off as small differences but to me they are still slightly noticeable. First, the bearings are slightly better quality. Second, the backup anti-reverse mechanism is left out of this reel. Third, the brake pins are they grey/clear variety over the standard redish pink pins. The reel also feels a bit smoother to me as well. Great reels for most all bass techniques with the exception of a few heavy torque techniques. The maroon color looks sharp as well. Nice pickup! bass1980 Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 The Scorpion XT is a heck of a deal with the low yen right now. I hear what you're saying about the JDM monkey. Just a few hours ago I ordered an Alpha SV and a Shimano Exsence DC! I almost pulled the trigger on the Steez limited SV too but......that means I'd have to get another Megabass rod but I'm officially broke now. Quote

All those small differences you mentioned are what got me to try the JDM route and check out the Scorpion. The better price over USDM offerings right now helped. I kept looking at used Curado/Chronarchs and even new Chronarch but the Scorpion was just a better deal. Now just have to decide if I'm getting another one or gonna try the discontinued Aldeberan MG7, they are going for good prices on eBay right now. I am going to swap out the grips on the handle of the Scorp for some PGIIs like the Chronarchs have and add a couple bearings while I have them off. Oh and agree, I love the color! Quote
