I like to cast them past a piece of cover and slowly reel them through it. They are my go to bait when I can't get a bite on jigs, crankbaits, and other larger profile baits in clear water.

Are you talking boot tailed swim baits? I couldn't comment on paddle tailed swim baits as I think of a paddle tail like a netbait Thumper worm or Zoom SpeedWorm.

If you're talking baits and grubs like a SuperFluke, I like them on an exposed jig head, hopped along to get the tail moving. They also are great trailers for spinnerbaits and buzzers. About the only other application I'd use them for would be an umbrella rig, but I prefer curly/ribbon tail grubs.

It depends on the bait to me, some are better at certain things than others. Baits like the Zman Diesel MinnowZ are great as a stand alone on a jighead or as a trailer for a swimjig or bladed jig, while baits like the Zman Grass KickerZ are good on a belly weighted swimbait hook fished through grass.

Solid or soft bellied swimbaits, I prefer fishing with a weighted off-set EWG swimbait hook.

Checkout the Freedom Tackle Hydra Hybrid Jig

It is taking a while to catch on but I can tell you first hand, they work well.

As Bluebasser86 said, it depends on the type and for me it is solid soft plastic and hollow body soft plastic. The solid ones for me are either fished on a jig head or on the back of a swim jig, the hollow body ones are fished on a weighted hook most of the time but I will use a big jig head every now and again when fishing it deeper than 5'.

I'm with Crestliner. I really like them on a belly weighted EWG style hook. I've really come to appreciate the Big Bite Baits Cane Thumper. It seems pretty versatile as well being able to use it as a trailer on swimjigs and spinnerbaits as well as being thrown on a normal jig head. You can throw them on the rig as well.
