halochef Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 i have some questions.1) why is garlic "flavor" such an attractant? 2) if i buy a "shad" flavored attractant, why can't i add 2-3 Tbs or 2 0z. of garlic infused oil to that mix and enhance it? OR add some garlic powder? (garlic salt might not dissolve) 3) can one buy a cheaper garlic infused oil and use a "spritzer" and coat a bait w/ this mist? i don't think i would want to add 'raw' garlic to the attractant, but if one poaches them for a few mins the flavor is milder. thanks halochef Quote
RanndomUndead Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 i believe the story goes Garlic contains an amino acid that is also found in fish, and some people tend to lean towards bass cant distinguish between anti vampire powder and chlamydia...Its really all speculation though. Quote

SFL BassHunter Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I'm not to sure about the garlic deal. I have a bottle of Bang in Garlic, I also have the KVD Fishsticks tubes that apply like lip balm and I have had far more success with the Shad and Crawfish Fishsticks. More hits and I feel the fish hold on to it longer. Not saying the Garlic doesn't work, I just personally haven't had as much luck with it. The fishsticks is far more compact and easier to apply. Far less risk of getting wind to blow the garlic your way. Quote

I agree, I've used some very popular super-garlicy smelling solutions and it didn't do much good, but I put on MegaStrike and start getting hits that hold on longer. Besides, it smells better/not so strong. I think MegaStrike smells a bit like Fritos!! 1 Quote

Besides, it smells better/not so strong. I think MegaStrike smells a bit like Fritos!! I've been told mega strike is good. The reason I use fish sticks is I don't need to touch the stuff at all. But yeah when I have used the garlic stuff I have to toss that bait before I put my gear in the car otherwise it stinks it up. I don't have that problem with fishsticks. I can put it back in the bag with my other plastics and the stench doesn't come through. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Garlic AHHH the smell of garlic- Fish attractants with garlic -It will catch every Italian fish in the lake. If you don't bite this stuff I'll smash your head and give ya the cement overcoat treatment Ok my take on the garlic small attractants/ People think that its the smell of garlic that attracts the fish -I don't believe that -I believe that the airborne and waterborne molecules are two totally different compositions and detected differently by the fish.. The garlic OK REMEMBER THIS -real garlic and artificial are two different -substances- Real garlic is a bulb/root ---it is loaded with amino acids that fish will gravitate to and yes taste and consume-Garlic powder is usually synthetic=made in a lab=fragrance or essence . The smell however is from the Allicin- It is a allyl-methyl sulphide nothing to really do with the chemoreception/taste- What I believe the fish are tasting are the amino acids -They are water soluble-The Allicin is slightly water soluble-more soluble in alcohol. If the garlic you are using is in an oil form-it is basically going to be undetected by the fish anyway- So without going into a big chemical speech, I believe that the smell dosent attract the fish--the lure attracts the fish -the fish attacks the bait-the aminos are detected as a flavor-therefore the fish holds on to the bait I believe if its a synthetic composition with no aminos-its basically worthless. So put away your powdered stuff because most of it isn't worth using -Drop the powder grab the cannoli- Signed Yo Vinny 1 Quote
halochef Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Yo Vinny, thank you, for the answer. i understand and the answer makes complete sense. i'll just use the garlic for the fish when i cook it! thanks halochef ps chef Bernard Loiseau poached the garlic 8 times to make his "garlic puree" for his ' Frog Legs w/ garlic and parsley puree' Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 There is a black garlic on the market which is a "fermented" type garlic bulb. I have been doing some reading on it and it is supposed to be a super garlic. They are finding uses for it in the medical field with some pretty astonishing preliminary results Quote

Super User bigbill Posted March 24, 2015 Super User Posted March 24, 2015 When I first started using scents they had a scent for just about every bait. I used the correct scent/smell for every bait. It worked. Baitmate(example) Original bass scent anything Crawfish scent crawfish cranks Garlic scent great change up pitch. Live bait scent anything Work & crawler scent plastic worms, creature baits Shad scent on minnow baits Now with less and less assortment wise of flavors where does that leave us. I'm fishing at my usual spot using the original bass scent and it's slow very slow. We're the baseball pitcher calling the shots. I change the scent to garlic and the bite is on. The misses uses that chopped garlic in the glass jars. I told her when the jar is empty to save me the juice. Don't spill the scent in the car. I had a hatch back car that fished from shore from. I spilled some garlic scent in the hatch back. I drove around that summer fishing smelling like a Italian salad. It didn't attract any hot babes in bikini's but it attracted the bugs for sure. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Actually garlic is mother natures insect repellant. When we ingest it garlic will exude through our pores and keep I sects away. Proven fact 1 Quote
