thehooligan Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 This gets asked alot, the general consensus is the *** is the best. 1 Quote
Poolshark Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 My personal favs are the omens, bps extremes, and carbonlites (sale). I use them all and am just as happy with them as some of my more expensive setups. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted March 22, 2015 Super User Posted March 22, 2015 Best $100 rod is a like new ( used ) $200 dollar one.. Or, models being closed out, steep discounts can be found then. I think the *** blank may be the best, but not the build quality or handle design. Consider customer service in your decision as well. 2 Quote
Kevin22 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Didnt like the grip of the ***, but it is a nice rod!! I prefer the veritas. I know they break alot, but they really feel good to me. Im eager to try a duckett ghost, I think that could take #1 for me. Quote
SenkoGuru Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I would say the best $100 rod is the Duckett Ghost. They are very nice for the price. Quote
Inoah88 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 St Croix Mojo Bass rods $120 Powell Inferno rods $130 Quote

Super User DogBone_384 Posted March 22, 2015 Super User Posted March 22, 2015 *** or Veritas - you choose. Both are light and sensitive. I'd say the Veritas load better. I've never dealth with ***'s customer service and Abu's once, when I snapped a Veritas in my truck's tailgate, for which they were great to deal with. Quote
Kevin22 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Veritas breakage is a myth based on problems when they first came out. I'm sure you are right. Just a myth that this one broke on the hookset last Wednesday. 1 Quote
Kevin22 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I should say the breakage issues should NOT keep you from buying a veritas, the customer service is top notch. Just send an email with pictures of the break, the whole rod, and your receipt. If its under 30 days old they will send you a new one no questions asked, if it is older than 30 days then they charge $9.95 (payable by CC or check) and they will send you a new one no questions asked. My replacement for the one that broke on Weds is on its way as I type this. I should also note that it took them 15 minutes to reply with a case # and a phone number to call. After calling it took less than 5 minutes to pay the $10 fee and have my replacement rod's "order" sent to shipping dept. Quote
Penguino Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 The veritas gen1 had huge problems with breaking. That's why Abu came out with Gen 2. Gen 2 is supposed to be much better in terms of breaking. Quote
Kevin22 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 And then came out with 2.0 because of the breakage issues with the Generation 2. I have a few gen 2, hoping they send me a 2.0 so I can try that out and compare. Quote
C_Stout Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I have to say go with the Vertias. The only Veritas I have had break where of my own doing. Quote
DocNsanE Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Pretty sure you can find the tatula around $100 if look hard enough, another one to consider. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the recommendations in this thread, just grab your reel, go to the store, put it on some rods and find the one that feels best to you. Quote
fishinphilly Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 anyone ever use the falcon Bucoo casting rods? i have a spinning one that i love and its really sensitive but i never even picked up a casting one before Quote
Big C Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Carrot Stix. Best rods ever, probably they most underrated too. I'll never buy a different brand. Super light and sensitive rods. I have three and could not be happier. If orange isn't your color get a green one. Quote

I also know for certain that the warranty program is complete bs. Quote
kikstand454 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 You can ask 100 different people about any rod and someones going to say they break. Abu makes good stuff. They have a rep for having good CS. Almost all the manufactures have a GREAT rod in the $100 range. ..... take the reel you want to use and put it on as many rods as you can and try them out. If that's not possible, then just pick a brand YOU trust and get that comapanies $100 rod. 1 Quote
JaxBasser Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I think the Phenix Maxim is a nice rod in that price point. I love mine. Really nice components and solid build quality. I've owned a Veritas, ***, and the Phenix. Just pick one, hard to go wrong. Quote

This^^ You can find $200 rods for $100-120 all the time if you want to put in the effort to find them and have patience. I got my Gen 1 cumara for $100 when the new models came out, Got a Powell Endurance series for around $140 when they're normally closer to $200. Just got a new Okuma swim bait rod on amazon a couple days ago for $95 when they're normally $140. I saw a brand new GLoomis GL2 sell for $107 on ebay when they are normally 200+ (was kinda ticked when i missed that one) I have never paid full price for a rod and I don't buy used ones either. you just have to keep an eye on Ebay & Amazon, also the sale sections of sites like Tackle Warehouse, Tackle Direct...etc. you can find some killer deals.
