Jiggy With It Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Kayak fishing a local reservoir I hooked into what I expect to be a double digit fish, twice! The first time I felt the line tighten and when I set the hook it felt like a stump, until it started running! The fish managed to swing my boat from a 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock position and began pulling me into open water almost like Jaws! Just as quickly as it started my line snapped and the fight was over. So I fished the area and managed to catch a 4lber in the spot I hooked the monster, but after checking this fishes mouth the was no hook marks so I knew the big girl was still out there! After about 10-15 minutes it began raining and I felt the line tighten once again. Just as before, the nose of my kayak swung and I set the hook and the fish ran for open water. This time the fight lasted roughly 2 minutes and as I was grabbing my net behind me, the fish went from my right to my left and crossed under my boat and the line popped.......!! 12lb brand new flurocarbon snapped twice from the same fish. I managed to catch of glimpse of the fish before she broke free and her belly was roughly the same size as my paddle! Not her head or tail but just the white belly alone was the size of a kayak paddle... I've caught several 4-6lb bass out of this kayak before and none managed to pull my boat this much or fight this hard. Y'all know where I will be tomorrow! 1 Quote

Trenton Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Sounds like your floro is getting nicked up. Fish with 14lb or try a hybrid line like yo zuri they have the same properties of floro but are more abrasive resistant like mono. Good luck with your monster!! Quote

Jiggy With It Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 I don't think it's the drag.. I have it set "perfect" plus the kayak moves easily as I found out so there is some "give". The issue was the lake has a lot of thick weeds & submerged trees.. I also had the line run against the bottom of my kayak as the fish swam under my boat- right as I was grabbing the net... It is the line though... It's Spiderwire Ez Fluro and it's trash. I just bought some 15lb Red Label fluro and it's a night and day difference from Spiderwire. I've noticed a lot of fraying in spiderwire just from landing big fish (4lbs+) Quote

BassObsessed Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Most people have encountered some hawgs that broke them off. I can't remember half of them. It may be overkill but use some 50lb braid . Some piece of mind that the line won't fail. Quote

If you run the Q tip through the guide and it catches on anything, you have a damaged guide. Even the tiniest nick in a guide will destroy you line in no time. You'll be much happier with that Red Label, it's one of the best budget fluoros you can get. Quote
ward131 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I lost two fish a couple of years ago, one right after the other. I changed my line to Spiderwire braid and have not lost a fish to broken line since! This year I am changing my other rods from other Floro and Mono Brands to Spiderwire. Quote
