Penguino Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 So I recently just bought a Skeet Reese Victory Reel. It sounds very noisy, so I want to lube and clean it. I have no idea of what to do, so can somebody tell me how to do this? As of now, I only have oil, but I will probably end up buying more cleaning and lubing materials. Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 There a lot of videos on exactly how to take apart the reel, lube it, and reassemble the reel. If you have more specific questions we will gladly answer them. Good luck. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 20, 2015 Super User Posted March 20, 2015 Recently? It shouldn't make noise at all. Quote
Penguino Posted March 20, 2015 Author Posted March 20, 2015 Recently? It shouldn't make noise at all. Straight out of the box... small noise coming from the handle side of the reel. Quote
Penguino Posted March 20, 2015 Author Posted March 20, 2015 Take it back. Its not that noisy... its just not as smooth and refined as I expected. From what I have heard, the problem is that Wright and McGill doen't oil or lube their reels before selling them. Im pretty sure the reel itself is fine; its just that I need to clean and lube it up. Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 If they are indeed selling un-lubricated reels, which I highly doubt, all the more reason to return it and buy something else. 1 Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 agreed, i would take it back. atleast exchange it, but before leaving the store, see if the new one makes the same sound, if it does then get something else... Quote
Bruce424 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 There should be a lube port at the bottom of the reel. Use the oil for the worm gear. If you don't want to take the reel back sometimes the reel just takes some time to break in. Don't take the reel side plate off until ya watched a couple reel maintenance videos. I recommend lake fork guy videos to watch. They will take ya through the basics. Fishing Gear Clean Up: 2 Quote
Lacustrine Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 How loud is to loud. I just got my curado in and I can hear it when I reel, but it does not sound grindy or dirty, but wouldn't anything make a noise to some degree when spinning? Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Any maintenance is better than none but this is a superficial and or interim maintenance. All those spray oils on the first video will actually dissolve grease. Plus he ignored the spool bearings. Oiling the spool shaft makes the bearing less effective by slipping in the bearing. Use this advice and send in every so often for a deep cleaning. Quote
Bruce424 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Those videos are just to give ya an idea how reels come apart and to see where oil and grease go. Lake fork guy gives a great demo on disassembly and minor maintenance of baitcasters. Quote
mhilgtx Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Is it recomended to do anything to new reels? Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Is it recomended to do anything to new reels? Yes, these steps are HIGHLY recommended: Step 1: Mount on rod Step 2: Fill spool with Proper amount of line in desired strength Step 3: Attach Lure to said line Step 4: Get lure (see step 3) wet. That is all!!! If you feel that any "maintenance" is needed for a reel that is factory new then the only "maintenance" that is needed is to return the reel for a replacement. 3 Quote
mhilgtx Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I posted this after seeing DVT say something about seeing lots of grease in new shimano reels. Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I posted this after seeing DVT say something about seeing lots of grease in new shimano reels. That does happen from time to time. The best thing you can do is use it. Break it in and after the first season either send it to DVT or do it yourself. Plenty of companies would rather sacrifice performance to reduce the number of warranty claims due to a failed bearing Quote
