I went out to fish a mostly iced over pond last weekend to test out my new spinning rod/reel.  the rod is not a mirco guide. It's a Daiwa Lexa 6'8 M rod.

The uni to uni knot I tied on my braid(20lb) to fluoro(6lb) was about 6 wraps each side.

On many casts, the knot was catching on my guides and shortening casts substantially.

-Do you guys have a workaround for this or a way to tie the knot better to where it doesn't catch on the guides?

-Or is there a better knot to use that doesn't get guide-snagged.

It was a real pain in the keyster if you get my drift.  Not to mention the ice on 90% of the pond at this time of year is buzz-killing my fishing.

Thanks for your help.

There's a workaround: learn the Alberto.

There's another knot that I'm working on that's even slimmer. FG knot. I'm not very good with it, but you might give it a try.

I use the uni-uni knot with 8# mono equivelent diameter superline and 20# fluorcarbon leader sometimes.

I use 6-8 turns on the superline side and 6 turns on the mono side and cut the tag ends flush with the knots.

I have no issue with micro guides or any other guides.

The Albright / Alberto  is a better knot imo and I also feel the FG has promise. However, a uni/uni knot trimmed flush shouldn't have ant dramatic affect on casting. You may feel it tick through the guides but actual distance should be acceptable. Given the conditions you describe, I'd attribute any casting difficulty to the iced up guides and line.

Another vote for the Alberto. After a season of practice, I can whip one out in no time. Just takes getting use to is all. Much better than a uni-uni. Slimmer and stronger. It is really "not a knot" per say. It's more of a braided weave.

i use uni-uni knot. I hear the knot tick thru the guides, but the casting distance isn't affected. Rods have 3.5mm and 4mm guides.

I use the Albright special. Amount of wraps depends on the diameter of lines that I'm joining. I would try 10 wraps for those lines. Braid is the green line in the pic.

Read this yesterday and got me thinking, I don't really use an Albright or an Alberto, it's my own version.  Ties up fast, slim and it's plenty strong.  Thought I was doing some thing wrong, then I thought about the fish I land, I'll stick with what I use.
