cdunlapb12 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Is it normal to see this? Also I could be mistaken. But there were definitely very small fish breaking the surface when I brought my chatter bait through them. Quote
ABW Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I was bank fishing and saw some fry along the rocks in multiple places.... was wondering the same thing. Water was still super cold. Quote
fishangdood Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I was bank fishing and saw some fry along the rocks in multiple places.... was wondering the same thing. Water was still super cold. I know the rocks heat, especially today with clear skies for me, but it was still a dry cold. No baitfish whatsoever. Quote

cdunlapb12 Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 Today is the first day I saw them. Windy day, partly cloudy. I see the bait fish all the time in the late spring and summer around my dock, but never catch any bass. A weird place in my opinion.....or I'm just not that good of an angler. Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted March 19, 2015 Super User Posted March 19, 2015 All the tiny bluegill come up against the bank on warm days in late winter/early spring. That's probably what you were seeing. 1 Quote
Jiggy With It Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Probably Gambusia minnows (Mosquito fish). They love hugging the banks in shallow water avoiding the bass 1 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted March 19, 2015 Super User Posted March 19, 2015 I know pickerel also spawn really early, like right after ice out in some places so maybe that is what you saw....who knows though lol 1 Quote
Penguino Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 You can't really know unless you take a picture of one of the fry..... most tiny fish look a lot alike. Quote

This same thing is happening here, ive had baitfish in my cove which is running about 47 degrees for 2 weeks now. Yet no bass at all have moved in. Even weirder, one day there will be 50 baitfish grouped up like they normally are in spring, and the next, there wont be a single fish in the cove...Its definitely a weird start to the year Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I will see baitfish up shallow even when them water is 39 degrees. I doubt the ones you seen were fry though. Quote
Kevin22 Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 Pike/pickeral and yellow perch spawn at 38-44 usually. Not sure if you have any of those in the lake. Was probably just shiners though. Ive netted some that were microscopic this time of year. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted March 20, 2015 Super User Posted March 20, 2015 I've been seeing some little bream and minnows around my pond. Quote
