Inoah88 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Should I use 20-25 pound fluorocarbon line or 30-40 pound braid with a fluorocarbon leader my reel can hold 12/180 and am using it for Carolina and Alabama rigs. I need a whole lot of line to put on it Quote
Todd2 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I'd go braid without a leader for your Alabama rig. Braid with a copolymer leader for the C-Rig. These are the only two applications I use braid for the most part. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 18, 2015 Super User Posted March 18, 2015 I use Sufix 832 in 50lb with a Sunline Sniper 20lb leader for my C-rigs. Just what I use though. I'm sure you will get many options, and most will more than likely suit your needs. Quote
HardcoreBassin Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I'm kind of in the same boat as you regarding what line to use for C-rigs/dragging jigs. Everything I am reading says to use flouro because it will sink, causing less bow in your line, which in turn will give you more of a direct contact with your bait. From what I'm reading, mono and braid will both float/cause a bow in the line. Flouro will sink to eliminate that bow. I'm not very familiar with flouro line, but I'm planning on using that for these applications this season and seeing how it goes. - Dale 1 Quote
Inoah88 Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 Since Carolina Rigs use a lot of line while casting that is why I am thinking because the reel I want Abu Garcia Orra Inshore Casting Reel may or may not have enough line room it is 12/180 thats one problem Quote
JGBassinAL Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I throw those on two separate setups. Carolina rig I use 16 lb. Sunline Sniper fluorocarbon as my main line, then usually Sufix Siege monofilament in 17 lb. on the other side of my swivel so that the bait will float up more. With an Alabama rig I use 25 lb. P-Line CXX copolymer. You don't need your reel to hold a whole lot of line like you stated in your original post. Any 200 size reel will work. It's hard to spool a 200 size reel on a cast. Quote
Inoah88 Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 what test fluorocarbon I am thinking 20 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 19, 2015 Global Moderator Posted March 19, 2015 180 yards of 12lb test is a ton of line. Even if you really launch a bait, you're not going to cast 1/3 that distance with a C-rig or A-rig. I agree with those being 2 different combos. Unless you're fishing very heavy C rigs or very light A rigs, you're going to need a heavier rod for A rigs than you do for C rigs. I use a 7' 3" MH/MF-7.2:1 and 50lb braid for C rigs. A rigs get a 7' 6" XH/F-6.2:1 and 20lb copolymer. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 19, 2015 Super User Posted March 19, 2015 Not sure you'd combine these rigs. 59-65# braid for an umbrella, 15-17# heavy copoly with a C-rig. Fluoro is not my favorite with either. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 19, 2015 Super User Posted March 19, 2015 I don't combine them either. 50lb braid on my Bama setup. 15 lb FC with a Carolina Keeper for my C Rig. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 19, 2015 Super User Posted March 19, 2015 To echo prior posters - those are two different techniques that would be hard to combine on the same rig. For the carolina rig, I don't see anything wrong with going with braid down to the swivel and then using a fluorocarbon leader. For the A-rigs, I use 65 lb braid, that is coming from buddies who fish Table Rock much more often than I do and tell me that A rigs get stuck from time to time and it is easier to get them back when you're using braid. I've heard from other guys that heavy mono is better, but I wouldn't know. I went with braid and haven't had any issues. Quote

Super User webertime Posted March 20, 2015 Super User Posted March 20, 2015 I Carolina Rig a lot. I use a Citica E with 20lb Seaguar Abrazx main line (17lb mono leader). I throw 1oz weights in depths up to 45'... I have never ran low on line, don't worry about it. The above comment about line bow with mono and braid is SPOT ON. Quote
Inoah88 Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Okay so I am going to get braid should I get 50lb or 65lb test for A rigs Quote
