Jiggy With It Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Well I have 2 sit-in Perception kayaks (9.5' & 12') The 9.5 is relatively stable whereas the 12' isn't very comfortable in open water. I'm 5'11 175lbs and love to sight fish and fish while standing (who doesn't). I've seen some kayaks for sale at Walmart for $299 that was a SOT and considered it a worthy buy? The catch is, I have a limited budget as a college student. I could swing buying a $250-350 used /new kayak or use that money to upgrade the kayaks I have (rod holders-fishfinder-ect..) Quote
bassinnoobie Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I know people who own those yaks from wally world and say they are very unstable. me personally I would trick out the 9.5 foot yak. But thats just me. Quote
MrM_vs_Wild Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I have a 12 foot future beach sit in kayak that I'll use occasionally if I'm going out solo. I don't really care for a sit-in kayak though for fishing. I only bought this one cause I found it for 200 bucks on craigslist and thought i'd give it a shot. I also have a Old Town Sportsman square back canoe that I fish from more frequently and much prefer over the kayak. For one, I enjoy having a little more room to move around. Because of the wide base of this canoe, my fishing buddy and I can both stand up and fish from it. I also use a trolling motor which also helps maintain boat position and scoot around from place to place. That being said... If your dead set on getting a kayak.. I'd opt for the sit on top as long as it has a wide base and is stable enough for you to fish from. I have been in a few sit on top kayaks that were so unstable I could never imagine fishing from one. The only real benefit of the sit in kayak is that your center of gravity is below water level, which makes it more stable, and if you are fishing in colder water it'll keep you mostly dry. It's really up to you but if I were in your position I would probably sell one or both kayaks and invest in a proper sit on top that is designed for fishing. You'll be happier in the long run if you make the investment. Besides... as a college student don't you have some loan refunds coming back to you?? Just don't tell mom and dad that you borrowed 1000 of it to go buy a wilderness systems or jackson fishing kayak. Quote
MikeJames Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Keep an eye on craigslist. A lot of people are getting new yaks and selling their old ones. I got my Tarpon 120 w/paddle a couple years ago for $300. Quote
Jim Mac Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I would sell both kayaks and buy a SOT kayak. 1 Quote
Big C Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I have an Ascend D10 (sot) it's super stable I stand up %90 of the time I'm in it. It's only like $300 at BPS. It doesn't track well but, I use it like a paddle board most of the time anyway, so who cares. Quote

Wondering because up here in WI I would like to get out as early as May and then would fish into September, the water can get awfuly cold. From what I read SOT is the way to go...but again I would be 100% green on kayaking. Thanks for any advice. Quote
kikstand454 Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Here in Florida, a sit inside is just unthinkable! ( i know people still do it. ....but i have no idea why) Having TRULLY cold water up there. ...maybe that's a question you should ask in a regional forum with kayak anglers near you. That being said, i would sell both sit insides, add that to your $300 and go to my nearest kayak shop and ask if they have anything they are selling in their rental fleet. Tell them what you're wanting to do, and where you're wanting to do it. ... and they will steer you right. That's probably the best place to get a good name brand kayak on the cheap. Alot of times with you being totally new, they may let you paddle a few around for free. If you narrow it down to two or three , rent them for a couple of hours each and fish out of them. That will tell you all you need to know. Good luck! Its addicting! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 20, 2015 Super User Posted April 20, 2015 There's really nothing that would get me to fish from a SINK now that I've fished from a SOT for almost a decade. Seat time is really the only way to determine the best fit for you. In cold weather, I wear a semi dry suit. 1 Quote

I don't use mine if it's too cold though(water and air temp). I'm a wimp!! Quote

But if you're going in really cold water wear waders. If you end up getting the Ascend D10 buy another set of scupper plugs it only comes with one set. (Or I lost the other two for it) Quote
GADawgs Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 If I were you I would save my money for a year and put yourself in a better yak next year after selling your current kayaks. You can pick up last years models after Christmas (good idea for a present is $$ for a new boat!) and have a much better set up. If you get a lot of accessories for a less than spectacular kayak and "trick it out" you are still riding around in a less than spectacular kayak. I decided to wait a couple of extra months and buy the yak I wanted instead of buy a crappy one and upgrade later and I am really happy I did. That being said, I would get a SOT, much mor conducive to fishing. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Yeah, scour Craigslist for a SOT in your price range. If you see one above your range it doesn't hurt to lowball them. They might compromise. One you can stand in is probably not in that range. I have a $500 one I wouldn't try that in. You can craft some cool DIY outriggers from cheap PVC pipe and caps. Quote
