Went out to a pond today before work. It was all ice until sunday/yesterday, today it was open water. I brought along two rods...my jig rod and jerkbait rod. I fished for about an hour.

I set up on the back shore of a small cove with a point that leads to deeper water. There are tons of stumps and sticks in the water. Using a jig/trailer very slowly, dragging it across the bottom I could feel all the ticks as it hit stump after stump.

Then I felt a slight tap tap that was a little different from the rest, not really expecting a fish I gave a slight hook set. Then it pulled back and it was game on.

I fought the fish, got it to my feet, bent down to lip it and it shook the hook... I was livid. It was a nice 3.5-4lber.

So what I learned...if you think you have a bite really set the hook to be sure. I'm new to jigs and that would have been my first fish using one. I went from heart pounding to almost crying hahaha in about 5 minutes.

The bright side is you felt the fight and got to fish. Part of NJ I am in you could still ice skate on the lakes and ponds here

Well happened again today, same spot except on a jerkbait..twice. first was small about 1lb shook the hook again at my feet, second was giant.. bigger then yesterday. Except this time it shook it's head at my feet and broke the line. Now I feel bad cause it has a smithwick stuck in its mouth.

You can fish now? Lol in central jersey there is still a thin layer of ice. Over the next couple days, as it gets colder, the ice is gonna get even thicker.

All the ponds near me are good to go..less then a week ago they still had 3"+ of ice but then we got that rain a few days back and its gone. Im hoping Friday doesn't bring it back as I only get to fish for about an hour before work each day.

You won't think it's cheating when a bass shakes his head and sticks a treble hook in your thumb.

Who doesn't love some good battle scars ;)

But in reality, I use my boga grip if trebles are involved. I know...boga/net what's the difference, but I don't put it anywhere near the water until I know the fish is tired. I don't wanna see a fish swim away with a $100 scale hahaha

At least you have water that isnt frozen :/

19 degrees this morning. Forecasted snow around friday/saturday.

And It was 60 degrees just a week ago...

The positive aspect of all this seems to be that you're fishing in the right spot...

Got out there again today for an hour before the rain starts, it was my first day out again since the latest snow storm.

I lost another one, I am now 4 out of 4 missed hahaha. Today to was on a spinnerbait, nothing on a jig or jerkbait.

I'm psyched that I managed to hook into fish each day I've been out so far this season. Soon I will manage a photo of one.

1x booyah jig and Rage trailer

2x smithwick jerkbait

1x booyah spinnerbait

All have been hooked in the mouth and all have managed to throw it.

This has actually given me a new personal record...most consecutive losses lol

Lol. Might want to work on your hookset. What type of line are you using?

How steep is the bank? You might want to try dragging the bass up on the shore a little.  The bass will flop around some, but they have a little harder time getting back in the water.

3 different types actually, braid on the jigs, fluoro on the jerks, the spinnerbait was on mono. I feel my hook sets were appropriate, the only line I'm not so confident in is the fluoro after the knot broke. But I have since learned a better knot for it so we will see.

At the end of the day I'm more concerned with the fish swimming off healthy, I don't wanna risk damaging it's slime coat. But believe me I've been very tempted to drag em out lol.
