I love me some Amazon, but their variable pricing drives me nuts.  I get different prices than the OP.

When I'm shopping for something I always log in with both my accounts and with my wife's before pulling the trigger.  Not at all unusual to get three different prices offered.

The more you visit the site, the higher your prices.

Isn't there a way to combat this by deleting cookies from your browser or something of that sort?

Which is why I got my tatula rod 40% off?

If you add items to cart or wishlist you can see their prices fluctuate and by how much so you can buy when prices drop.

This is a fact! I've had Amazon do that to me every time I do a search on an item with them. Every day or so, the price goes up. My browser is set up to delete cooking on closing and they still find me!

Maybe simply deleting cookies ain´t enough. Download something like CCleaner. It gives you ability to delete cache, cookies, compact databases etc from specific browser. Worth a try.

Sometimes it has the opposite affect, especially a month before black Friday! A few years ago I got a new LED Smart T.V., the price was 899.99, and everyday I'd go back it would be a $889.99, then it would go up to $909.99 and after that price jump up, it came down in a hurry, 2 weeks of visiting the site and it came down for a total of 6 hours as I got it for $684 and 4 hours later is was up to $799. That place is funny like that, and the same thing for my Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rod, I keep looking and it stayed the same until one day when I got an email with a 12 hour sale, $77.49 shipped, that was just nuts and of course it never happened again.

Again, you don't need to delete cookies and amazon doesn't increase prices when you search. Their prices are set by their vendors and the prices fluctuate depending on how bad they want to get the product off their shelves.

I am quite confident that it is much more complicated than that.  I am certain that if you and the guy sitting next to you search same ten items at the same time, you'll find that three or more, maybe all ten, will have different prices.  Amazon not only nudges prices based on who is logged in, they constantly adjust prices based on their greatest competition. If Walmart moves the price of a reel down five bucks, you can bet that Amazon's price will drop within minutes; regardless of what their vendors want or how much inventory is on the shelf.  That is further complicated by agreements with many vendors and manufacturers who set minimum advertised prices, as well as minimum retail prices.

Amazon is merely a middle man for vendors to use. Amazon has their own products but they don't sell or ship for their vendors. Daiwa for instance sells many products through amazon but amazon does not dictate price to daiwa.

I was interested in 7'7" tatula and I searched for it for a period of 4 months waiting for a price drop. I couldn't add it to my wishlist to monitor (firefox glitch) so I had to search almost every day. Price didn't budge but was under msrp. One day they dropped to 75 despite a hundred searches.

Not sure how this myth started but it has no grounds in either reality or business.

Edit: saw an online post that a few years ago amazon tried custom pricing based on customer habits but had dropped it after backlash.

Amazon pricing for me changes everyday. Some days I manage to get really good deals. For example, I managed to get a Okuma c3-40x rod that retailed for $170 for 60$.

I saw this price at walmart still kicking myself for passing it up :violent1:

I have seen there prices change constantly.  I shop for odd ball stuff on their site all the time.  I have yet to see a consistent pattern.  I guess if you see a good deal, you should jump on it.

I can tell you they will lower prices when they get down to only a few items in stock. I have got some killer deals on work boots, close to 50% off

It is your IP address plus cookies plus other stuff.

I`m not sure what you guys are talking about, prices changing constantly? For me it`s just discount days and normal days. Haven`t seen much fluctuation aside from that.

Wanted to note that while I stand by my comments about pricing strategies that I find questionable, I did want to point out that Amazon has a (little known?) charitable donation function called smile.amazon .  If you log in through smile.amazon and pick your charity, Amazon gives .5% of each purchase to your charity.  There's a number of fishing related charities available to choose from.
