cdunlapb12 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Is there an average time of year? I'm having a really tough time catching anything on the river this past week. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted March 17, 2015 Super User Posted March 17, 2015 58-65* water is about the magic number. Quote
z7master167 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 The river will be hard to fish until the end of may Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 22, 2015 Super User Posted March 22, 2015 Look at the Dogwood trees. Don't get them confused with the cherry blossoms that bloom first. When the Dogwoods bloom the bass are on their beds. Work backwards from that and you have the pre spawn time. Good luck. Quote
RHuff Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I'll be heading out to fish April 6, 7, and 8 hard.. Hopefully the bass will be biting in southern WV! Quote
cdunlapb12 Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 I've been fishing the river 4 days a week. No luck yet. Waters at 52 degrees. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted April 1, 2015 Super User Posted April 1, 2015 I've been fishing the river 4 days a week. No luck yet. Waters at 52 degrees. At 52 degrees the smallies should be very active, but then depending on where on the Kanawha your fishing there may not be any fish. I think that chemical spill last year really messed up the fishing for awhile. Quote
cdunlapb12 Posted April 1, 2015 Author Posted April 1, 2015 Well, I actually caught my first one of the season today. Looked healthy, no visible problems. The river was 51 degrees and caught him on a Spinnerbait. I'm starting to think there just aren't many fish near where I'm fishing. It's tough to figure out. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted April 1, 2015 Super User Posted April 1, 2015 I never had much luck on the Kanawha, except the upper reaches from say Gauley Bridge down to Smithers. Get down around Montgomery and I'm lost, just never did very well in that area. Glad to hear the fish you caught was healthy, that was a bad spill. Quote
RHuff Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I'm suprised it is in the low 50s already. We haven't really had any warm, warm weather yet. I think everyday is supposed to be between 75 and 60 next week so hopefully that will help. Does anybody know any local lake temperatues yet? Fish should be biting at 52 degrees. Quote
cdunlapb12 Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 Yeah I'm surprised too. I've been keeping track of the river surface temps myself. I don't have any lake temps but if you need Kanawha river info I can help. I've caught two nice fish this week, so they must be getting more active. Quote

Idk which lakes you're wanting, but the corps of engineers have websites for their lakes giving water temps top and bottom. Just google the lake you want and you'll find the websites, some will be corps of engineers and others USG's. Although if memory serves most all lakes in WV are coe. Here's the link to the army corps lakes http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visitors/states.cfm?state=WV And to lakes and streams from usgs for WV http://waterdata.usgs.gov/wv/nwis/rt 1 Quote
RHuff Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I looked up several sites but swear for the live of me I couldn't locate any temperature readings Quote

cdunlapb12 Posted April 5, 2015 Author Posted April 5, 2015 Yeah I never found any temperature readings either. Sometimes on the DNR's fishing reports they list a ballpark temp like 60's or 70's but nothing really accurate. Quote
RHuff Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Gotta think the rain has warmed up the water some in most of WV Quote
cdunlapb12 Posted April 5, 2015 Author Posted April 5, 2015 It has a little. I was down at the river today, 53 degrees and muddy like chocolate milk. The lakes probably get even more of a warming effect from the rain with all the creeks and run off flowing into them. You could do what I do and just get a thermometer to keep with your tackle. I got a nice one at cabelas that works just fine. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted April 6, 2015 Super User Posted April 6, 2015 I looked up several sites but swear for the live of me I couldn't locate any temperature readings On the corps site pick your lake from drop down menu, then once there pick lakes website, there u will find temp, ph level, dams output in cfm, etc Here ya go some aren't reporting yet USCOE Huntington district, (your area) general info temp included for all water in area. The lakes on this list are hyperlinked to it's specific website with allot more detailed info, the same for streams, took less than 5 minutes. Lakes like bluestone and summersville show as inactive, but click the hyperlink then click current conditions it will show depth, pH level, oxygen content ppm, temp, etc. http://www.lrh-wc.usace.army.mil/wq/lkcond.html Kanawha river from USGS http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?03193000 Depending on type of station USGS may or may not include temp. Between the two sites you can find everything u need to know before leaving the house. Quote
RHuff Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Thanks for the additional info. Caught 9 bass and a monster crappie at Plum Orchard today. Fish are biting Quote
