Sherlock 60 Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 It's 70 degrees and sunny in Indiana, the ice is pretty well gone, and I CAN'T GO FISHING TONIGHT!!! Quote
Djman72 Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I'm my neck of Indiana, we've still got ice on all of our lakes/ponds. It was 65 here today and i'm just now seeing some open water near shore. I've still got atleast a week of this weather to even consider it. More like 2. 1 Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I was able to go fishing this afternoon so I got my kayak out and went fishing in it for the first time this year! Man, it was so good to be back on the water kayak fishing. I didn't get any bites though. I used a jig, jerk bait and crankbait. I didn't even see any small fish swim around. I did see a turtle sunning itself on a limb and dome ducks swimming around. I threw in a pool thermometer and it read 50 degrees! That was in shallow water. I was shocked. I don't get it - if there was ice on the pond a few weeks ago then how can the water be 50+ now? Does shallow water in small strip pit ponds heat up really fast? Quote
ABW Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I went fishing Sunday and I skunked. Of course I was fishing jigs and jerkbaits with no luck but as soon as a friend shows up and throws a tiny plastic lizard 5 feet from the bank he hooks up on the 2nd cast. I guess the bass's metabolism is too slow that they don't want to be fed big baits yet. Quote

If it was just a dink, then I'd say thats why you didn't catch one, and he did. Quote

Ozark_Basser Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 They were dinks, but that's better than not catching anything at all I guess, but I wouldn't compare what larger bass are doing to what the dinks are doing. I'd say you were missing something else other than the bass not wanting to be fed big baits, if that was the case. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 16, 2015 Super User Posted March 16, 2015 The ice is on here yet. I moved my rod setups they were near the kitchen table were I can drool on them. Lol I have an awesome wife who understands men have there hobbies. I leave stuff everywhere. Quote
yugrac Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Not ready to get the boat out yet, have a few small things I want to do to the trailer, but the ice is off the small pond in the park here. I would love to hit the river for some cold water wading on sunday if we dont get any more rain this week. The water level should be right [safe] if all goes right. Fly rod and smallies is the plan. My plans very rarely work out. Quote
DILLY07 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I live in Iowa. I've been fishing every single day. Only one day I skunked. It hit 82 degrees here. Quote
yugrac Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Dilly07, ya got alota nerve sayin that stuff in front of all us northern half of Indiana folks!! . Just seen that The reservoir a few miles west of me is still covered in a couple of inches of ice. Quote
Djman72 Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I'm about as north as it gets.... Still hoping, waiting, and wishing. Starting to see some open water, but its not quite fish ready. Quote

Shallow water can heat up extremely fast, especially if it has a rocky bottom Quote
