I'm just getting into this and I'm about to order the stuff I need to start. I was wondering If I should just buy one of those rod kits to start or put one together on my own?

My first rod some 15+ years ago was a kit.

I never tried a kit... never found on with the blank and all components I would have chosen so rather than settle, I just ordered what I wanted.  If the kit has what you like and want, it's probably a few $ cheaper to buy that way.

If you decide against it and need help putting together the shopping list, feel free to ask one of us or just post.  We'll always help people spend money!!   ;D

Marsh Master,

I am a total noob here with rod building but will share what I have.

My first half-dozen rods have all been by "component" - no kit. I knew the blanks I wanted, researched and ordered the components I wanted - tip top, guides, reel seat, cork, etc.

Have been wanting to build a surf rod for quite a while. Thought it would be easiest to get a kit - thinking it would have instructions for the setup. All I got were the raw components and no setup instructions. Getting the componenets was a huge help, but what I really needed was the setup. I ended up researching and "designing" on my own, and, now have an outstanding surf rod.

The point here is that getting the components all together is a huge plus. But, if looking for instructions/directions, check before you buy. I assumed directions for setup would be included with a kit - but for my surf rod they were not.

Sorry I should have gone with my pat answer, first you need to do some reading before you start buying components it helps get you moving in the right directions.

I would recommend if you haven't already, read the sticky in the top of this forum "Newbies with rod building questions". There is more info you will need as ejtaylor822 stated you will not find any building instructions in a kit..

Good Luck..... :)

Yea reel mech I've been doing alot of research but it doesn't answer alot of questions that I have. Thats what you guys are for.

I've been intrested in rod building for a year or so but realy started looking into it hard for the past two weeks. I haven't made any purchases yet becouse im not quite sure what to buy. Like the reel seats, what are the different sizes? How do I know what grips to buy and the peices on top of the grips(i can't remember the name)?

I'm looking to build a fairly cheap rod to start because I know it gunna come out bad. I've talked to a guy at swamp land rods, don't know if ya'll ever heard or delt with them but they got some close outs on castaways that'll get me started. Plus they're in driving distance from me.

So if theres any advice ya'll could give me or any sites I should look at please fill me in I'm willing to learn. Thanx :) :)

MARSH MASTER,

Yea Lance Dupree and the guys, are regulars and advertisers on the rodbuilding.org forum... :)

Did the guys discuss reading this book, Rod-Building Guide by Tom Kirkman it's only 14.95 and it WILL get you off on the right foot for sure. IMPO any rod builder pro or amateur should have that book in their library...
