Hey guys, I would like to know what the best all around jig shape is. I need to buy some jigs, but i want to spend as little as possible. I mostly fish natural lakes and rivers. Thanks!

I suggest that you take a look at BassResource's jig videos.  He does a pretty good job of describing which shapes are best for what applications.  Then consider how you'll be using them and choose one or two or three different head shapes.  From there, like most here, I'd suggest you try Siebert.   Or maybe post a WTB (want to buy) in the Flea Market here -- I'd bet that someone on here has 'extra' jigs to sell.

I would say 3/8oz and pretty much anything besdides a football head style will work well for pretty much abything. The only jig I use is D and L baby advantage jig in 3/8. These can be bought in *** and are $3, they are made in kentucky. Oh yea a jig doesn't have to say "swim jig" on the package before you can swim it lol.

siebert outdoors.com pick what you want i would go with a dredge head, and for size a 3/8oz is all around best size in my opinion

For me,  best all around jig I use is a 3/8 Dredge Brush jig.  I fish it in just about everything until you need specific tackle like heavy weeds.

I personally use 3/8 oz Hack Attack Jigs with a 4" Pit Boss trailer and I live up north like you do fishing similar waters. The head design is awesome for moving in and out of cover. Pitch it, flip it, or swim it... It's all good. These are readily available at the stores, very affordable, and you don't have to pay for shipping and no waiting time.

Most river fishing with a jig is all about keeping it from snagging and smallmouth bass. Small natural lakes are very different, no current, fewer snags, more vegetation and largemouth bass.

A 1/4 oz to 5/16 oz ball head with single wire or light fiber weed gaurd (finesse jig) and smally beaver trailers work good most in rivers.

The brush head with weed gaurd in 3/8 would be a good lake choice with craw type trailers for largemouth.

Consider 2 types, no reason to have too many jigs of any type, buy a few at a time until you fish what works for you. Premium hooks the right size for your line and bass is far more important trying to find the panacea jig head style.

Tom

PS, site sponsor Siebert makes both jig styles.

I also really like these jigs. They make a great "all purpose" jig.

3/8 Arkie head.

I get mine from Serbert. I wish I would have gone with simple jig colors a lot of dollars ago. Use the trailer to add accent.

The jig that works every where, the jack of all trades is the ball head jig, plain and simple. It works in rocks, wood, weeds and everywhere in between. The best all around jig I think is the 5/16oz Eakins jig, the only thing with it is that I wouldn't use it on a flipping stick with 50 or 65lb braid, but if you want a good jig for 8lb up 12 or 14lb line with a MH-F rod that you can drag, hop, or skip, that would be the jig which is a ball head jig.

Brush jigs are my favorite all around jigs.

My new favorite is the Siebert Outdoors Grid Iron Football Head:  http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/Grid-Iron-Football-Jig-471.htm

Basically, I need a jig to work through different types of cover, possess fish attracting qualities and be of sufficient construction to hold up against the rigors of the technique.

I've tried a few different types & styles with a variety if results.

Haven't tried them all as there are just too many.

However, once I started fishing this type rig, I stopped looking.

This one does everything I need a jig to do.

Very Versatile.

When I first started fishing jigs I wrote Mike at Siebert and told him the types of places I was fishing, the bait I typically see and how much I wanted to spend. He put me together an awesome little package of lots of different types of heads, skirts etc.. That was like a year ago and I still catch fish on those jigs consistently. The ones I like best are the football head and dredge style head. Arkies are a great all purpose style as well.
