Brandon Moss Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Easily asked question, can braid cover ALL aspects of topwater fishing that mono covers? I am trying to eliminate mono line if I can. The only purpose I really have kept it around for is for top water work. Thanks in advance guys. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 It can, but I like mono on most topwaters due to its stretch. It's all about preference though. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 13, 2015 Super User Posted March 13, 2015 Easily answered...........Yes. I use nothing but braid for all my fishing. I always use leaders, a bit of shock IMO is important especially for topwater. I keep my leaders about 18" fresh and 24" for salt, too long leader is more stretch than I want, I may as well use mono. I don't use braid for it's strength, which is always higher than the label. If I'm using 10# for example my drag is going to be somewhere around 3# or less, plus I'm using a lighter leader. Doesn't make any difference how strong the braid is as my chain is as strong as the weakest link. I use it for line management and capacity. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 13, 2015 Super User Posted March 13, 2015 The problem with tying braid directly to top water baits is that you run a high risk of getting the line tangled in the hook's split rings. Especially with a walk-the-dog type retrieve, or any presentation where the bait has some slack in it. Braid being very supple has a tendency to loop around the baits more easily than mono and get tangled. What I usually do is tie on a short, 2' length of mono leader to the braid with an Alberto knot. That way the relative stiffness of the mono keeps tangles to a minimum. 1 Quote
