Really not too complicated.  See a doctor.  Get some meds.

The thing is, he has to want the help.

Uh, it sure is complicated, some folks are adamant there is no problem ( mental chemical imbalance) others, simply cannot deal with meds.( Powerful) many go undiagnosed, rarely have I seen occasions where a individual w a actual chem imbalance ever being able to conceive of this fact. It's anything but "not complicated" in fact, it often can be down right frightening to witness. I wish him well and I believe he will come to terms with this mental & physical health crisis. With the proper guidance and support from family and great friends, he should be able to take control of that dark period and put it into the proper perspective.

That is, assuming there is no chem imbalance.

That is where a Dr. and referrals are & will be needed, and are vital. Best wishes..

I think what you saw today was pure unadulterated relief. He came out. He found out that he does not have to face this devil alone. His friends and family will support him. That does not mean he is cured. There are probably some rough times ahead. Just continue to support he and his family. Good Luck, you've done what you can do.

Depression sucks and yes it is a chemical imbalance.  I dealt with it in college.  Was not easy.  Went to my doc, tried a few meds until I got to one that worked for me.  Took the better part of a year to get out of that rut but with meds, working out and support, I did.  I suppose everyone's situation is different, but speaking for myself I didn't want to live with the issue and took the bull by the horns.

His doctor is the place to start.  During routine visits doctors are now asking questions designed to detect depression in their patients.

Depression is a serious medical illness. I work in inpatient psychiatry as an Rn, and we see this stuff all the time. Tell him to see his primary care provider and make an intake appointment with a psychologist.he needs to learn new coping skills and try some medication. Many new psych meds have minimal side effects

Any adult that says they have not suffered depression "to some degree" probably will not admit it to anyone or them selves.

Its good to talk to your friend about it

Hey Gardenerjigman, how is your friend doing? Just wondering what he did? Others might read this and it might trigger something for them I think that probably all of us have fought this problem in some degree at some point in life.

Keep us updated on your friend.
