Nlm321 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 When I throw my baitcaster I usually go through a 300 yard spool in a week and a half. Considering I go fishing almost every single day. Am I doing something wrong cause I waste through line compared to what my buddies do. Thanks Quote
EvanT123 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 A had a spool of 12lb big game on a reel for two seasons. The only reason it no longer is on there is I sold the reel. As to why you are going threw so much line? I haven't the slightest idea. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 You at either braking off or retying more than your buddies. I like to use braid with a fluoro leader. This will slow that down a lot. 1 Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I dont know if youre mistaken about how much line you are going through or what because your reel only holds about 120yards so your estimate is almost 3 reels worth of line in a weeek and a half. Maybe you need to practice tying knots without 3 feet of line left over. 2 Quote

Something is seriously wrong if you are going through a 300 yd spool in a week and half. You must give us more info to try to help you find the root cause. Quote
ABW Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Too many "professional overruns" lol? I use braid and only have to change when I don't have enough line to cover my backing. Even so you could actually just tie the braid on backwards and use it again. 1 Quote
Thornback Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Before each trip I cut about 2 feet of line off and retie my hook. I use braid. You are definitely using too much line. Tell us where you're losing it -- back lashes, cut offs, breakage??? Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted March 13, 2015 Super User Posted March 13, 2015 Maybe, when I fished salt I changed every 3 days, ( 30 ) hrs exposure. I change out often myself in fresh too, so it's cheap enuff for me to change for the sake of my sanity! Backlash related? Or just structure abuse? Change it out, if your fishing everyday. Monos are cheap compared to other aspects of fishing.. Quote
Bruce424 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Are you using backing? that would save a lot of line. Quote
ColdSVT Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Most of my reels will have the same line throughout one season...once in a while ill respool a reel during the season (sometimes because of a blow up or ill get low on the spool from reties and or breakoffs)...and im out 2-3 times a week Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted March 13, 2015 Super User Posted March 13, 2015 A 300 yard spool of braid would spool 6 reels with backing for me. It also would last me all fishing season unless something crazy happened. With normal break offs and re ties I'd be fine though. My record last year was 17 days in a row. At least 2hrs on the water but 2x a week it was 8hrs. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 13, 2015 Super User Posted March 13, 2015 Without seeing what you're doing it would difficult to point out what the problem is. Since you didn't mention line type I'm going to assume it's mono. Are you backlashing and cutting line out, do you troll your line out before each outing ? 300 yds in a couple of weeks with a reel that doesn't hold 300 yds, is beyond excessive. Since your the man on the scene my suggestion is to figure it out yourself. The education of knowing ones own gear is invaluable. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 13, 2015 Super User Posted March 13, 2015 I like to use braid with a fluoro leader. This will slow that down a lot. Simple solution. 1 Quote

Am I doing something wrong cause I waste through line compared to what my buddies do. Thanks Unless you are getting serious backlashes or are a tournament fisher, something is wrong. Considering that I can use a 300 spool of mono for two seasons, I think you should be able to get a lot more line usage out of the line you have. Also, it depends on the type of line? Fluoro is the most abrasive resistant, but also accumulates memory the fastest. Quote
JigMe Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 I got all braided line plus leader and change leader after 2-3 outings, this set up lasted me few years now without putting on new lines. Quote
