james 14 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I'm about to respool all of my reels and before I buy another 1000 yards of power pro I want to consider using something else. I've been using the stuff for over a decade and it's simply not what it used to be. I used to beat the crap out of this line and never had it break. Yesterday I had it break three times and one of those was snapping on itself mid cast. I also never had to worry about how old it was. I can't help but think that's part of the problem. So I'm going to start anew and, very possibly, with a different brand. If anything out there holds it's color that would be a plus as well. Suggestions? Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 Power Pro is great braid. I still fish it but have started using Sufix 832, little smoother. But the original PP is still great line. Only other line I use is Spiderwire ultracast and only use that for my spinning reels. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 After suffering some of the same unsatisfactory and unexplained foolishness you mentioned, I've switch from Power Pro myself. Sufix 832 Braid Lo-Vis Green has be a solid & reliable replacement. I'd recommend you try out a small "tester" spool for yourself before going all in on a career supply Good Luck A-Jay Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 Power pro is great braid. There is no doubt there are other good braid brands out there. If your power pro broke on you 3 times in one outing something is going on. Several factors could be the culprit. I will found out why first. Something could be wrong with one of the eyes on your rod and the next braid you choose will suffer the same fate. 1 Quote
Penguino Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I use hi-seas braid and I see nothing wrong with it. It is also made in the USA and cheap. Quote

Line loops during a cast catching and snapping. NEVER happened until 3-4 years ago. 2. Line snaps when ripping lures out of grass. e.g. ripping a spinnerbait off of a lily pad stem. I used to rip entire pads clumps off the bottom. Now I can plan on losing the bait if I don't go and retrieve it. Quote

Could be a factor. A-Jay Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Sufix 832 for me. 10# for spinning. 30# for baitcasting. Been fishing it for 3 years and no problems. 2 Quote

Super User Master Bait'r Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 I like 832 and SX1/FX2. 832 is smoother and quieter but SX1/FX2 is more durable IMO. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 I like and use regular PP ... regularly. 10# Yellow for spinning 20# Yellow for bait casting I always use a leader. Braid's expensive to try out, so A-Jay's suggestion of a small spool is good. I'm getting low in my supply of PP, and always question whether I want to try something new or not. Most of the time I return to PP. Guess I'm just comfortable with it. 1 Quote

Super User Scott F Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 I just bought some PowerPro Super 8 Slick which looks promising. Much smoother and quieter than original PowerPro. I think the 8 strand braids like 832 are the better lines these days. The Super 8 Slick is also not real stiff. I do think super lines start to get weak when they get old. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 Do you ever experience the braid digging in with that diameter? Assume you mean for bait casting? There is digging in from time to time, but I often check the line if I've had a tough fight, or a big snag. Honestly, it doesn't bother me if/when it does happen since it isn't too frequent. No problems on spinning with the 10. 1 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 The suggestions to use another brand of other braid is sound. But I think the OP is missing something to cause that braid to be snapping like that with so much frequency. To the OP what lb braid are you fishing with? Have you always used this lb test of braid? Is it higher or lower than 40lbs? Where has the 1000 yd spool of braid been kept? Have you checked your rod? I have been using power pro for years. The only reason it snaps is when the line has some abrasion and the strands have been compromised. Quote

On the 10th. or so cast, I launched my LC Spinnerbait into the next County. I retied and 10 or so casts later, I launched another LC Spinnerbait into the next County. I finally decided to see what was going on, I'm sometimes dense, and the transition guide of my new Spiral Wrapped rod had an edge like a razorblade. Sent it back and had the guide changed, problem solved. Brian. Quote
Cgrinder Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Alternatives? Lots. Anything strictly better? Not really. It doesn't hurt to try new things. I tried the blue/green Sunline and I like it for some techniques. Quote
a1712 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I use Stren Sonic Braid. It's fairly quiet, stands up to abrasion more than most, and retains it's color fairly well. We've been useing it for the last 5 or so years without a complaint. Brian. 1 Quote

The only reason it snaps is when the line has some abrasion and the strands have been compromised. It's happened on nearly every rod and every reel on multiple spools bought over the last 4-5 years. I think age may be part of the problem as I can't directly recall it happening on fresh line. However, I used to keep PP spooled for years with no problems. EDIT - looking back I would actually say more like the last 3 years. 4 years ago I was still using line that was at least 3-4 years old and only changed it because it was "old" and I started fishing tourneys every month. Maybe 2 years ago I had the first break off mid cast and have had several since then on many different reels. I think there's something where a loop in a backlash gets caught and the line isn't able to stand up to the shock on that small area. I'm using and have always used 50lb. I used to flip with 30lb and rip lures out of emergent vegetation without a second thought. If I did that now it would break most assuredly. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I'm a big fan of Sunline SX1, only braid I use unless I'm froggin or punchin, then I use Sunline FX2. Sunline makes the best line all the way across the board IMO, but everyone has their own. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 12, 2015 Super User Posted March 12, 2015 You didnt happen to get the fake PP thats been sold the last few yrs???? Quote
