What Frog Seems To Have The Best Hookup For You?

Hey guys, it's frog time. And I usually use horny toads. But lately I cannot get a good hookup on the horny toads. I feel that the frog is too thick is the center. And the hook cannot penetrate through the frog and the fish's mouth. I missed over 30 blowups. Is there a certain hook or frog that has better hookups for ya'll? I seem to wait long enough for the fish to take the whole frog, and soon enough before he spits it, and I still can't get a good hookup. The gear I'm using is

Power Pro 65# braid

Mustad Ultra Point 4/0 EWG hook

Zoom Horny Toad/Stanley Ribbit Frog

I am fishing some pretty heavy grass but it doesn't really effect my hookups any.

Are you tex-possing the hook, have it burried in the bait or have the hook exposed?

It's texposed most of the time. Sometimes the hook point will pop out and it will be exposed but it is never buried.

I never have been a fan of EWG hooks, prefer a G-Lock or other style but had a problem getting good hook-ups on those with Fat Ika's.  I improved my rate with an easy fix, I basically bent the hook and made it offset.  Seemed to help so that may be something you may want to try.

Look into VMC drop dead hooks. A friend of mine turned me on to these. I am a Gami hook user myself but the concept of these VMC's I could not ignore. Since these frogs are usually fished while the frog remains in motion, when you see the blowup keep reeling until you feel the fish's weight. Then set.

I've been using Owner's with the CPS for some years now and they've all but stopped this problem for me. Primarily I've used the standard 3X Twistlock hooks in 5/0 & 6/0. Last year I started using their Zo wire flipping hooks with CPS and they seem to work just as well if not better. I leave both hooks buried slightly under the skin and never have any trouble getting solid secure sets.

Gamakatsu 226414 EWG Double HKS is the only thing I use for my frogs now. It keeps the bait upright and has drastically increased my hook-up ratios.
