I think most of us have purchased lures and just never get around to fishing them . Going through my tackle I found a Luhr Jensen Brush Baby purchased thirty something years ago. I dont know if I ever fished it. I'm moving it to my number 1 crankbait box to make sure I see and use  it this year.

You guys have much success  with a Brush Baby?

What are some old lures you have forgotten about ?

Scaleface, how about a photo. I have never even heard of that bait. Would be interesting to see it.

I am cursed with a quasi photographic memory and I am a bit OCD with fishing so despite having a garage and boat full of tackle I rarely forget a lure as I have been only fishing for 7+ years or so. I was digging through my soft plastic swimbait box and came across the remnants of a banjo minnow kit that my grandfather gave me when I was a kid. Out of the 5 or so baits left, there is one that I remember was a pure fish catching magnet. I know they are a gimmicky lure but theres one size/color that catches fish for my home lake. I think I will re-stock...RIP GRAMPS.

I believe they made it in a few different sizes. I used to have a brown and orange one as a kid.

I was only a kid when I was using one, so a lot of that has to do with the fact that I never caught a fish with it to my memory. I know I had a northern take a swipe at it though because it's got a hole poked in it from the tooth. I tried to use it a few times after that but it'd slowly fill with water and would just sink like a rock. My grandpa had given it to me for either a birthday present or Christmas gift so I kept it anyway. I still have it hanging in my bedroom at our cabin.

i have 2 of these which I got from a former bassmaster Larry Lazoen.  Both patterned like yours fire tiger orange and fire tiger chartreuse.  Larry said they were good.  I havent fished with them much because I really dont want to lose them,  They have a wide wobble and dig in.  I would guess they would be good for working over deep brush.

yeah they are pretty good...I've still got 5 of them stored away....maybe I will break them out this year too.

I have one, I bought it a few years ago at a Farm&Fleet, they have at least one more there too. Havent fished with it once besides testing out to see its action ( I don't fish mid - deep cranks much).

I've still got quite a few Brush Baby's and still have success on them. Comes through heavy cover really good.

I have a bunch of the smallest size they sold 2" body, that work well in a shallow rocky stretch of river I fish. The smallies like them and they don't wedge easily in the rocks like other baits. Have only used them on the river, maybe I should take them out in the boat this year.

I think that Brush Babies were the first incarnation of the Timber Tiger.  Timber Tigers are a little more elongated size for size, they still have the "wings" on the side and the lip doesn't have quite the cut that the Brush Baby does.    The two baits are so similar, I'd be surprised if they didn't share a designer.

Good eye! The late Tom Seward designed the Brush Baby when he worked at Luhr Jensen, and the Timber Tiger then we was working for Worden. IMHO, the Brush Baby is the more effective of the two, and all these decades later, it still my goto crankbait for mid-depth brush, rip-rap and especially for cranking sunken barges on tidal rivers.

Back in the early days when I lived in Oregon I would go to Luhr Jensen in Hood River and talk to Tom Seward.  Very creative individual who did their lure designing and a fishaholick.  Lived in a camper by Luhr Jensen and fished probably everyday in the Columbia River.  Created the Klawdaddy, Speed Trap, Brush Baby to name a few.  Was also interesting to watch them do all their painting by hand.....ohhhhhh the good ol days.

I just hit the buy it now on the 17 lure set of Timber Tigers on a salesman sample sheet (looked to be mostly shallow divers and in 17 different colors)... I'm not sure if I'm gonna use them or frame the set but if I do want to use them they do not come with split rings and hooks. Can anybody suggest the needed size of both split rings and hooks?

I only have the super shallow

Who fishes the LJ Hot Lips besides me?

Those look nice. I have about 20 of the small DT 6 size in metallic red, got for 2$ a piece, that I have used successfully fishing a very rocky stretch of river from shore. The only reason it falls out of the rotation is the Bandit 100 is a miracle worker in the same conditions. It is essentially a very good crank getting edged out by a great one.

The bigger shallow version might give the bandit a run for its money, too bad they don't make them any more. Luhr Jenson had/has some great cranks including the speed trap which is a bait loved by a lot of pros.

Editing to add I also picked up 20 to 30 klawdaddys in a couple of colors and sizes for under 2$ a piece. Those have also done well for me at times to.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome RichZ!  He is a wealth of knowledge.  And a hell of an angler.

I use still use Timber Tigers and Brush Babys. Use a size 3 split ring and a #4 treble hook on the Timber Tigers.

Thank you Mister Rat, I plan on getting some of the brush baby lures too. In the past 15 years I bought some used lures that had at least one of these lures in it but I didn't know what it was til now, I'll have to dig it out. Does either the Luhr jensen or the wordens have their brands on the lures or anyway to tell which brand I come across used and out of the pack?
