What Set Up Do You Use For Swimbaits? (Small Plastics Ones)

Hey guys so I have been making some threads lately about swimbaits. I picked up some keitech swing impact fats the other day. I also have some hooks for them. Now I am just not sure what rod of mine to throw it on. What kind of rod do you usually throw them on and what reel ratio do you like for it? Thanks!

For paddle tail swimbaits with a 3/16 oz keel weighted hook, I use a 7 MHF with a high gear ratio reel.

6'6" MH/F when throwing them at targets. 7' MH/F when throwing in open water.

I use a 6'6" M spinning rod for swimbaits over 4" in length, usually with a 1/16 or 1/8th oz belly weighted hook, for swimbaits under 4 inches I drop down to an ML 6' 6" spinning rod and use a 1/32 or 1/8th oz hook. I also try to use the lightest possible line for the situation that I can, just because I feel it gives the bait a more natural action.

Keitech 4.8's with a 1/8 or 1/4 weighted hook.  I use a 7' or 7'3" MHF (St Croix Avid or Dobyns Champ 734) with a 6.?:1 Reel (Daiwa Fuego) spooled with 14 or 16lb Sunline Sniper Flouro.  I fish them SLOW so the 6:1 ratio helps.  I've tried to use 7:1 and I was really hard to keep it as slow as I wanted.

 

Thankfully this set up is probably the most versatile set up in any bass anglers arsenal.

I use a MF or MHF field the most part. Depends on the weight of the bait. A 4" paddle tail on a 1/4 oz head throws well on a LTBC70MF. Any heavier, and I go up to the the Sweeper MH version of that rod.

One the great things about these baits is the versatility, but I like the action with them on a lead head 1/8-1/4 slow rolled near the bottom on M/F spinning tackle. If conditions call for a heavier head or cover I'll throw them on a MH/F casting setup. Braid in either case, leader added if conditions indicate.

I like to throw the 2.8 keitech fat on an 1/8oz owner flashy swimmer, and the 4 inch keitech easy shiner on 3/16oz flashy swimmer. I use a 6'8 medium fast cumara and 6'5L expride.

Although I haven't thrown the Keitech swimbaits, really like throwing the Big Bite Baits Cane Thumper, and I've thrown it almost exclusively on a m/f rod with fluoro and a 7.1:1 reel. I wouldn't be opposed to throwing it on a little slower reel though if you have a hard time slowing down.
