Super User clayton86 Posted March 10, 2015 Super User Posted March 10, 2015 Pretty sure I've got arthritis already at the prime age of 28. All my joints ache knees, elbows, knuckles even my toes ache and crack every time I curl them. I know there's guys here with arthritis what's a remedy to help with it. I've been taking Aleive which has been helping some.
Super User Scott F Posted March 10, 2015 Super User Posted March 10, 2015 According to my doctor, arthritis is almost any pain in your joints. I've been dealing with it for 25 years or so. Over the counter meds do almost nothing for me. Long term help, something I am not good about doing, is exercise. When my knees were getting bad, I started wading in my local rivers. The low impact, walking in water strengthened my leg muscles and kept my knees from hurting as much. I hate exercise just to push a weight around, but doing something fun and productive worked out. In the winter when I can't wade, the arthritis flares up some and I know if I'd get off my lazy behind, I'd feel better.
Super User Sam Posted March 10, 2015 Super User Posted March 10, 2015 Don't act like a doctor and try to treat yourself. Go and see your doctor about the pain. You could have something else going on. 2
a1712 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Good advice to see your Doc.. Tons of new treatments available. I'm going to get Rooster Comb injections in my knee to start the fishing season. It's supposed to last several months. Brian.
Super User Catch and Grease Posted March 10, 2015 Super User Posted March 10, 2015 I get aches and pains all the time for no apparent reason, Probably not ccomparable to arthritis though. I'm assuming its just from cross country and wrestling over the years...
VolFan Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Oh good lord....you sound like my wife... Go to an international grocery and buy a couple pounds of beef tendon. Stick that and a couple quarts of beef stock in your crock pot or a pot with a lid and park it at 275 for about 8 hours or until the tendons are tender. Strain out the tendons (you can eat them, but it's admittedly an acquired texture), season to taste, and drink a cup of that every morning. The gelatin and other proteins in it help keep your joints flexible and lubricated. Also, warm up, stretch, spend less time typing and maybe do a little yoga every now and again.

Seems like every joint in my body hurts, at one time or another. Best advise from doctors and therapist is to keep moving. Sit still and complain 'cause it hurts just makes it worse. Exercise is better for your body than meds. 3
Super User Oregon Native Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 Have had the pain too....especially in the hands. Do take fish oil and also vinegar and honey with water. Seems to help...really notice when I quit. Another biggie is to not eat so much refined sugar...bad ... bad ...bad. This is a toughie......love sweets.
Thornback Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 My age is 75, labs are good and I'm not overweight. I have arthritis in both hands, they feel swollen and I can't make a tight fist. Several fingers are starting to curl like a banana. Holding a fishing rod is OK but the next day I pay for it. Holding a steering wheel for a 2-hour drive is hurtful. Left knee has arthritis and feels like there's broken glass in it. Already had orthoscopic meniscus surgery in that knee and doc said he saw arthritis. My treatment -- For my hands I run hot water over them each morning for about half a minute while flexing them. That really helps. No OTC meds have worked for me. Even tried the horse DMSO but that didn't help. Doc says it's osteoarthritis and be glad it's not rheumatoid arthritis. Thanks doc, I needed that. OK, hot water over hands each morning and I do 5 knee bends (not deep bends) each morning for my knee, putting most of my weight on the left knee. Since doing that about two months ago I can tell a big difference in my knee. Now it doesn't hurt and I can go up steps like a normal person. Good luck with all your pain solutions. If you hurt all over you may have fibromyalgia -- there are doc prescribed Rx for that.
Super User Lund Explorer Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 Just remember that no matter how painful, it's better to deal with Mr. Arthur Itis than to get a visit from his cousin, Mr. Ricky Mortis! 1
Djf3864 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Have you had any blood work done to make sure that it is not something else causing the joint pain issues? I am by no means an MD but I do know that there are a number of diseases out there that can cause these symptoms. They can do scans and such to confirm the diagnosis if nothing shows in the blood work. Just my $0.02.
Super User F14A-B Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 Sure, sure, go see a doctor, surest way to end up with 5 diagnosis you never knew about.. Peppers! Cayenne, specifically.
aceman387 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I have found that eating healthy( avoiding processed foods) and exercising (strength training &stretching ) has helped me a lot with arthritic pain. I have read some good things about the spice turmeric as being helpful for natural pain relief also. 1

I've been taking Aleive which has been helping some. I know man it sucks. I'm the same age and feeling it too. When I try to sleep is when I feel it alot. I hear keeping mobile helps. When I lounge around and try to get up I feel pain in my knees elbows hands back. But loading sofas on trucks for a job don't help either. But my uncle swears by staying active and I try, but I also feel pain when I try to be active. Lose lose situation. Tylenol for me, been taking ibprophen too long I get sick off it. Hopefully when it warms up we don't feel it as much. I hear good thing about that tiger balm?... maybe give that a try.
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 12, 2015 Super User Posted March 12, 2015 You don't know you have arthritis until a doctor confirms it. There can be mineral deficiencies that can be mistaken for arthritis without the proper diagnosis. Through out my working career I was outdoors in all weather handling heavy objects, trucks, cranes, etc. Even as young man there seemed to be a new ache and pain daily, always getting banged up. Kinda just took it in stride, just an occupational hazzard. The heaviest thing I've picked up in the last 15 years is a ball point pen, yet I now have some arthritis, it just happens with age. I happen to have a bulging disc in my neck along with some arthritis there too. Went to a neck/spinal specialist, his suggestion was to live with it as isn't worth the risk of surgery. Any time a doctor tells me he doesn't want to make a buck off me, I take that as good advice. Unless absolutely necessary and prescribed I take little in the way of medications, even OTC has side effects.
papajoe222 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 One thing your Dr. will likely tell you is avoid taking antienflamitory drugs regularly as the will only mask the condition at the least and could contribute to other conditions. He will tell you to increase your water intake and possibly to add fish oil pills to the mix. Both will help, I know because those along with an occasional 800mg ibuprofen got me through my last 20yrs.
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 13, 2015 Super User Posted March 13, 2015 See a doctor. There are a number of new treatments that may allow you to live pain free and arrest the progression of the disease. Doing nothing won't help, but that is probably better than self-treatment based on internet chatter. 1
halochef Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 being a chef for 42 years(retired) its caught up w/ me in my knees and wrists. i do take meds for my knees but my doctor recommended the "parafin hot wax bath" it costs about $30.00. it melts the wax and once liquid i put my hand(or feet ) in the hot wax. its fairly hot and can only be in the wax for a short time. but after removing you hand, it still is warm and after it cools, the wax peels right off back in the small tub. its cool. the weather last year really hurt my wrist as i couldn't even use my french knife. it helped, and true, exercise helps. i use the Gazelle, less stress on the knees and more cardio
Catch 22 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 See a doc.Sometime diets can cause problems. Long ago to much to much caffeine became a problem for me.I reduced it as much as possible and became a new guy. At age 66 my joints became a problem for a while ,so I started taking 2 fish oil tabs and glucosamine each day and it really made a huge difference. I took about 6 weeks to kick in but I would not be without them now. I`m 71 now. C22

Boy do my knees, elbows, fingers lock up and hurt in the cold, I feel like an old man! The biggest thing that helps me is fish oil supplements. They are said to help lubricate the joints and I can honestly say it has helped a ton.
