$1 plastic Stanley Ribbit frog.  Unfortunately attached to it was $20 Power pro, $109 Daiwa Ballistic T3, and a $99 Fenwick Silverhawk.  Frog hooks got lodged in the back of the boat on 1st cast and sling shotted it 50 ft into the river. 1st day out with new setup.  Still makes me sick.

This. This is the most gut wrenching sad story of the bunch, and at the same time would have been hilarious to watch happen. I just picture you standing there in a cast finishing pose with a bewildered look on your face. Like, "how the f#$k did that just happen?"

The worst I have lost is the top tray of my 3 tier plano box, a rod and a shoe. Tipped the ol canoe in some backwater when the old man reached to grab a dropped rod. Soon as he leaned over the gunwale we were in the drink. My tackle box was floating next to me and I was able to recover it (minus the contents of the top tray) before it went to the bottom. My second rod's line was looped around my leg so I 'reeled' it in. It wasn't until I was climbing back in on the bank that I realized my shoe was gone too. We had a good chuckle about that and it took the sting out of losing the rods and tackle (only slightly). My wife was supportive and listened to me mope about losing all that stuff. But after the second week of hearing me wimper, "I lost all that tackle" she had enough.

The fastest lost lure I have ever seen would go to my brother-in-law. He refuses to remember how to tie a fisherman's knot and it has cost him so many lures on the cast it isn't even funny. He will struggle for 30 minutes trying to get a knot on the lure, toss it out, reel in an empty line and repeat. I have tried so many times to teach him, it just never sticks from one outing to the next. But his all time best/quickest loss was while tying on a berkley weighted plastic swimbait, he just lost grip of it and dropped it. It bounced into the water and out of sight. He just shrugged, pulled another one out and said, "well, at least I didn't waste all that time tying the knot".

The most expensive I have lost was a megabass griffon that I ordered from a tackle store in Japan.  The line snapped during a cast and I watched $30 just float away down the river.

8" BBZ Slow Sink and a Hudd 68. My I almost lost an s-waver 200 but after spending an hour trying to get it out of the tree standing up in my kayak holding a 12' branch to swat at the bait wth, while trying not to fall out, I actually got it back!

I haven't lost a lure in a long time but I remember night fishing with a buddy many years ago only because he lost four spinnerbaits in a row. They were special made by a friend of ours for this trip and we each had six of them. We could see fish stacked up like cord wood on the FF in the shallows so we were pretty excited. On his first cast his line went limp all of a sudden and then you could hear the sound of the lure going through the tree branches on shore! OK, weak spot on the line, maybe, re-tie. Next cast same thing. Next cast same thing. I'm catching fish left and right, he's starting to look worried. He ties number four on and it vanishes just like the first three! By this time I'm thinking, man, if you throw all of those spinnerbaits into the trees, you are NOT getting any of mine. Finally I said show me how you are tying those on so we both turned on our hat lights while I watched him. He was tying a Trilene knot and we both realized at the same instant that he was leaving out an important part of the knot. After that, everything went well and we had a great night!

I sort of did the same thing. Was tying on a Rooster Tail spinner when my girlfriend hooked into a fish. I ran over to help her in case it was a big fish, thinking the spinner was already tied up and just letting it drop to hang out of my vest. Turns out I never completed the knot and I heard it hit the dock, then saw it slip between the wooden planks and out of sight...

I recently lost a Booyah Pad Crasher and a Live Target frog 5 minutes apart from each other to the same tree...

I'm a bankbeater, so loosing lures is a common thing.  The one that bothers me the most is when I lost my favorite topwater, a Owner Zip-n-Zig.  I had just caught a bass, reached down, being cautious of the sharp hooks, and the line broke.  The bass flopped in the water, swam off, jumping several times trying to throw the bait.  Lost!!!

Now, as I'm walking the banks I always find lures.  My latest find was a Jackall Binsky.  That's one weird looking lure!  Never seen anything like it.  Found it on a online retailer and saw it was a $15 lure.  Cool!!!

Had a 15 dollar lipless crank snag on a stump the other day....then as im trying to wiggle it free the knot failed...so i rightfully jumped into 45 degree shoulder high water in jeans and a hoodie without delay to get it back.....

Almost lost that one...the only hardbait ive lost was a 5 or 6 dollar buzzbait though...knot failed on that one too and sent the lure flying 100 ft while my line went about 5 >_<

And drowning, dont forget drowning

Has to be an Alabama rig. $15 for the rig, $10 for the Jighead's and swims, so $25. Not THAT bad but as a high school student with no job, kinda sucks.

I lost a TON of Ronz tails in St Maarten fishing for barracuda this past week. We troll off a little dinghy and were just slaying them, but each fish took a whole tail, so that can add up.

It really was the strangest feeling ever.  A lot of people I have told the story too can't understand how that could happen. It felt like I hooked on to the back end of a Mack truck.   It literally was ripped completely out of my hands.  Oh well I can look back at it and laugh it at a little bit now and is a good story to bring out to get a laugh or 2.

When you loss a expensive lure why don't you just dive for it?

LOL, I carry two plug knockers, and a pole lure retriever, goggles and snorkel, & folding saw, if I can I will. Sometimes I just cant...attached to a fish(My Baitsmith Shads and umbrella rig), or cold, moving, or deep water are some of the reasons why ya just can't.

Routinely speaking, a jerkbait is one of the last styles of baits I'd expect to lose.

Simply because it's usually a open water presentation, so if I'm losing them I'm definitely doing something fundamentally incorrect.

LOL, my lucky streak continues. I made it through vacation without losing anything of value, however multiple Baitsmith Mags were lost from the back of the boat and another 250 cast off.

Only a matter of time until the black cloud settles over me I'm sure.

Lost my a Megabass pop-x this morning. First cast, two pops and a huge fish fkr a 1/4 acre pond. Got it right up to the bank on 6lb line and was fighting my uncle's dog to get away from the fish as I was trying to lip it. He jumped in after it and snapped my line. I went in after the fish but couldn't get a grip. Luckily it was a catfish and not a bass. Probably 5+ lbs at least. One heck of a fight. Guess I'm in the market for a new pop-x.

When I was a kid, 10 yo or so, I was out trout fishing in western NY on April 1st. I had a small tackle box full of "stuff" I was carrying with me. I was crossing the stream that was flowing pretty fast and slipped on some rocks. The plastic tackle box was dropped into the water and away it went. I had every fishing lure/tool I owned in that box. In 1970 dollars it was probably worth $50. Without doing the math I believe it was quite expensive in today's dollars.

Not me, but I know a guy from North Jersey that lost a $400 + swimbait.  He was an avid collector, I think he had over 10K in swimbaits.  He did end up getting the lure back with a homemade GIGANTIC lure retriever.  Here she is......

In the spring I bought a Huddleston Bluegill not during there $25 run they had. Paid more than double and fished it in a pond where 4+ lb pickerel are. Didn't think of using a steel leader and on the first cast next to a laydown something big whacked the bait and I immediately set the hook only to have nothing but braid dangling in the air. That new bait wasn't in the water for 5 seconds and was gone. A leader was used on the next Hudd Gill that I used in there.

Earlier this year I "lost" a Live Target Bluegill crankbait.  Actually what happened was it snagged a very dead, very rotten sunfish and I didn't want to deal with it.

I often leave lures I've tried and not liked at that spot for other fishermen, so I went ahead and set it by the base of a tree.  I even retrieved the box it came in and set it beside the lure.  I hope someone was happy.

I did snag a Live Target frog on a dead tree surrounded by mat.  I'd bent the hooks out a bit to help hook up, and they snagged a branch.  I still see it when I fish there; one day I guess I'll take the boat out and get it back.
