tsxwgn Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I used to fish with my dad as a kid (15+ years ago) and have not touched a fishing pole since. I'm going camping in April at Clear Lake and want to go fishing for some largemouth bass! I've spent the last few days reading and searching and decided on the following reel/rod combo. Can anyone take a look and let me know what you think? I'm going with a spinner since that's what I'm used to but I'm not opposed to going with baitcaster as long as there's a good reason to. Rod: Abu-Garcia Veritas 2.0 (6'6 Medium) or Abu-Garcia Vendetta (6'6 Medium) Reel: Pflueger President 6930X (130 yards/8 lbs) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 Good choice, it will do the job well. As for line, my personal preference is braid (10lb or 15) and I would use a leader if needed. If you want to go with Mono - I'd go with 6 or 8 lb test. Quote

I would recommend starting with a spinning rod. I find them to be more versatile and easier to use. The reel you have chosen is a great reel that will last you quite a while. For rods, I would highly recommend looking at some of Fenwick's offerings. They have some great rods at that price range. For line, I would use braid. 10-15lb test Sufix 832 or Power Pro should do the trick on a spinning rod, for a casting rod you will want to go a bit heavier or use 10-20lb mono. Quote

Hell I still backlash atleast once a trip. They're not bad ones but still takes a bout a minute to untangle. With that said, to the OP. GO with a spinning set up. You would hate trying to figure out the correct settings for each lure you're throwing and getting the rats nest untangled. You probably have a limited time to fish anyway. I agree with the idea of going with a spinning reel, because baitcasting reels are hell to use, without somebody to teach you. Trying to learn baitcasting by watching youtube videos was not a good idea. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 10, 2015 Super User Posted March 10, 2015 I agree that a spinning outfit is the way to go. Baitcast reels are a steeper learning curve. Like already stated, better to be fishing than removing backlashes on your vacation. You will be casting like a champ again in a few minutes with the spinning reel. The gear you listed sounds fine to me. I am more a Fenwick guy, but nothing wrong with either Abu rod AFAIK. Braid will have zero memory and less line twist than any of the other types. No need to go heavier than 15#. Might want to lay down some mono backing first. You don't need 150 yards of braid spooled. One refill spool of braid is sufficient to top off your spool at least twice depending on how much is on the filler spool. Quote
