bhoff Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Hey guys, I was thinking of making the switch over to left handed retrieve baitcasters because I don't feel that I have much control fishing jigs, jerkbaits and topwater with my left arm. Has anyone here made that switch and had better results as a right handed angler? Quote
DCales84 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Same here. I'm right handed but feel more confident with a left hand retrieve model. The only major drawback is that many reel models I'm interested in are not offered in a lefty model. 1 Quote
Todd2 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Yes....I highly recommend switching. Wish I'd switched sooner. I had a one day learning curve and by the end of the day it felt natural. Quote
bhoff Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 The other problem is getting rid of these reels now. I have a daiwa zillion and a lews tournament mg that are almost new and in right han retireve... Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 The other problem is getting rid of these reels now. I have a daiwa zillion and a lews tournament mg that are almost new and in right han retireve... i went through the same thing. had all RH reels, then one weekend i tossed a lefty for a while and realized i had been missing out. i went through the painful process of converting my reels and taking small losses on the RH models to then fund new LH models. The flea market on this site is a great place to both sell and then buy some slightly used gear. Quote

Super User RoLo Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 I'm right-handed, therefore all my casting reels and conventional reels are left-handed. My subordinate hand cranks the lure and slack line, while my stronger arm sets the hook and pumps large fish to the boat. Also in this manner, I don't have to switch hands after every cast. I'm convinced that the first baitcasting reel was devised by a southpaw Roger 1 Quote
Blaze261 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I do everything right handed except fishing. I tried my cousins LH reel over 15yrs ago now and have been using LH reels since. I especially like it for top water, and for a quick return once othe lures hit the water if need be. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 I've used both since my second baitcaster. It doesn't matter, it's what you prefer, and what you're willing to learn. Quote
The Next KVD Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I tried using a left handed baitcaster for a year and I just couldn't get the hang of it. Loved the idea of being able to use both but I just felt like I had horrible control over all the motions. I had hook setting problems, fish control during the fight issues, ect. I would set that reel down and pick up the same rod/bait/line combo just with a right hand reel and the issues went away. However, I can cast as well as flip/pitch with both hands. I gave it a fair shot for a year and glad I only invested in one lefty reel to begin with. Quote
JaxBasser Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I reel spinning reels with my left hand and baitcasters with my right. Lefty baitcasters feel so weird to me, I just can't do it. I also can't reel spinning with my right hand even though I do it with baitcasters. Quote
Jaderose Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I'm a hand switcher. Even with spinning reels. I can't cast (well) with left arm and I can't reel (well) with my left hand. but I also can't hook set with my right arm. RH Baitcaster....LH spinning reel. The hand switch just happens are part of my casting motion. Works for me. Quote
masterbass Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 My first baitcaster was a righty. I switched to lefty and sold it and never looked back. Quote
bhoff Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Well with me wanting to sell my leftie reels, what do you think I could get out of a zillion and a lews tournament mg that I've only used 2 times each? Quote
Penguino Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Well with me wanting to sell my leftie reels, what do you think I could get out of a zillion and a lews tournament mg that I've only used 2 times each? Tournament Mg you prob. could get a good 50-60$ off of it. On amazon right now, a used Tournament MG sells for 55$ Quote
