fishangdood Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 This past winter was bad for me; caught the bug- Ambassadeur bug. Anyways, I'll finally cut off Ambassadeur fleabay buys to tonight's 2500c bid. My question is this, which reel foot stamps offer which gear ratio. I've got one 76, a 77, and now a 75. Now am I led to believe that the 2500c iar chrome schematic and parts order page on ereplacementparts provides the 5.+ gear ratio? Thanks in advance for any replies. Quote

The foot stamp offers no clue to the reels gear ratio, only date of manufacture. The 2500C IAR gear ratio is 5.3:1. I find the schematics on Abu's site better but hard to navigate to find. Mikereelrepair.com has excellent schematic archives but slower than slow to deliver parts. PM me if you want to talk about old Abu's ..... Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 2500's did come in 4.7:1 and some models in 5.3:1 - I have one of each. However, in practical terms, there's not a lot of difference between the two. On my reels, the 4.7 gives about 16 IPT at the top of the spool, the 5.3 gives about 18". Both ratios are SLOW, and both are used for the same types of presentations. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 U want slow i have 2 3.8s theybring in about 10 ipt with a full spool Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 U want slow i have 2 3.8s theybring in about 10 ipt with a full spool Are you talking about 4500s/5000s? I know they sure seem like they would be about 10"....but due to the large diameter of the spool if you measure the actual IPT it would probably be around a whopping 17" or so... 1 Quote
fishangdood Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 That reminds me of my conventionals like my Grandwave. It's 6.1:1 which would actually probably hang with the revo rocket or the new zillion, but it weighs a rocket ton. Which reminds me, I gotta pair that baby with a 9' or 10' surf rod for the summer. oldschoolbasser Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 You can get an Avail 6:1 gear set from Japantackle. 5.3:1 gear sets are almost impossible to find. All non IAR reels are 4.7:1,and IAR's are 5.3:1. Ceramic bearings, and an Avail lightweight spool would be a nice upgrade too. 1 Quote
0119 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Joel, have you started building up some of the smaller Ambassadeur's? I see the new lightweight 4500 frames have come up for sale. I can't decide what to do with my 2500s.... Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 The 2500C is the high speed 2500 is the standard speed. They are slow because of the small diameter spools, nothing you can do about it, put a power handle on and crank as fast as you can! Tom Quote

Ceramic bearings, and an Avail lightweight spool would be a nice upgrade too. My first 2500c has all the fixins from Japantackle including the gear set, but the recommended drag setting on the 6:1 conversion is worrysome. So for the new (to me-fleabay) 2500c, I'd like the 5.3 set, but I can't confirm if the new brass replacement gear and pinion is 5.3 as seen on ereplacementparts. The parts order sales reps at Spirit Lake have no idea what the part it is. All their terminal tells them, is that the parts description says, "Main gear" or something really generic. Funny thing though, is that when my face lights up when the fedex truck pulls up, the package slip then has a more accurate description (ex: record 5600-main gear cog milled 6.8:1). It's frustrating not being able to get a reel tech to give me details like Lew's customer service; they'll take your number and call you back in a few. Quote
oldschoolbasser Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Tom,the 2500C, and the 2500 are not the same reel. The 2500 was a direct drive model from the 60's. I think you might be thinking about the difference between "C" and the CI,or IAR. C's are 4.7:1,the others are 5.3:1. Henry,I've been using the lightweight frames for about 2 years. Mine are the 1st attempts by Simon to perfect the chroming process, makes a huge difference in weight. Simon's going to start making side plates for the 15-2500C's (I have a set reserved for me)hopefully all the same colors as his larger sizes. I'm pretty much done doing larger reels, going to concentrate on the little guy now. Minnow, just check the schematics page on the Abu Garcia web site. The part numbers you're looking for are 21759,pinion gear, and 22515 drive gear. Good luck finding those. Quote
fishangdood Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Alright, so to bump my own thread since I think I have a nice collective Ambassadeur mind-sets feeding it, do you guys know why the current ambassadeur records have side bearing plates when its on an ultra cast spool design. I can see reason for it like in the older c reels; shoot, most low pros, are designed that way (bearings riding inside the sideplates). It just doesn't make sense to me because as soon as you start reeling, the pinion gear snags the clutch washer (brake block) and then spins the spool which rotates on the bearings on the axle. I would think that if the spool tension knob was cranked all the way down, then maybe the axel will start spinning justifying the use of the side plate bearings. I just wished there was a low pro with the ultra cast spool design. I think that the oldschool promax and black max were like that. Quote

Alright, so ereplacement parts has the drive gear, but not 21759. Guess who I'll be calling tomorrow, haha. Thanks oldschool. Quote
oldschoolbasser Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Minnow, the only reason I can think of is for smoother retrieve. Yes the Pro,and Black Max were Ultracast spool reels. Quote
oldschoolbasser Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Minnow,I have 3 sets of 5.3:1 gears that I found a year ago from a fellow collector in Canada.I can check with him and see if he has any more. The 3 sets I have are going into reels that I will be building. Let me know if you find them. Quote
fishangdood Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 Meh, I called up Purefishing- no go on the pinion gear. Dang. Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 11, 2015 Super User Posted March 11, 2015 Call Don Iovino 818/848.6180. Don has been super tuning 2500C's for decades. Tom Don Iovino products. Quote
