demonjd22 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Hey everybody, so I'm agonizing over this choice and could use some guidance. The bait monkey is on my back hard, and being in NJ I've got a month or two to go before water opens up. After reading some other posts, people seem to really like for spinning reels the Pflueger President, and the Supreme is a nice little step above. I've found an older model Supreme 8235MG on clearance at $75 brand new (this is the tried and true one, with hundreds of reviews all over the net) but the new model SUPSP35 comes out shortly at an even $100 . I have no problem spending the additional $25 but I'm worried that maybe this new one might not be as good quality or there might be issues with a new release? (completely untested) On the other hand a part of me wants to say I'm getting the latest and greatest. Ive attached links of the different models. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Pfluegerreg-Supremereg-Spinning-Reel/1881006.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dpflueger%2Bsupreme%26x%3D9%26y%3D8%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=pflueger+supreme&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products Old http://www.cabelas.com/product/Pfluegerreg-Supreme-Spinning-Reel/1254593.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dpflueger%2Bsupreme%26x%3D24%26y%3D3%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=pflueger+supreme&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products I can't decide, I can't fish, I can't stop losing my mind over this lol (need something to do before the ice melts). Snap up the old one, save a few bucks and just be happy with it? Or hold out for the newer because I can't fish anyway for a while and hope they improved with a new release? Thanks in advance for any help everybody! Quote
Longo Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I own both the President and the Supreme XT. Both are fantastic reels for the price. I know what its like to want the latest and greatest but honestly I think you'd be better off buying the "old" and having the extra $$ left over to feed the monkey. It's tough with these long winters to not spend every last dollar on fishing gear just out of plain boredom! 1 Quote
Kpterry82 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I'd go with the old one it's still brand new and you know what you are getting plus you have 25 bucks left to buy a megabass or LC lure too! We have two or three days in the 50s this week hopefully it won't be another month I'm thinking two weeks and we can get back out there. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 I just purchased the old MGX model at Cabela's, the one in the link you posted. I got the size 30 and I will tell you this, at retail it is a good reel, at that price is is a fantastic deal, and 3 weeks ago I got it for $59.99 and it was an absolute steal!! It has a sealed drag system which is a big deal to me but is still a nice feature even if you don't care about it. I also like the sure click bail they use, I'm not a big fan of spending a lot of money on spinning reels but I like to get ones that are at least $100 as they are normally worth replacing parts if something goes bad. Anyway, I'm really impressed with this reel at the price point, magnesium body and rotor with aluminum side covers, spare aluminum spool and carry bag, plus it has one more bearing than the new one but still has the same gear ratio and weight, 7.5oz for the size 30. If I had the cash I would have got another one, maybe even 2 more but if they go back on sale like that again I'm going to grab at least one more. 1 Quote
bassin is addicting Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I just purchased 2 of the "old" model on sale. that makes 4 that I have now, I love them and have never had any issue with them at all. I didn't see enough of a difference to wait for the new version. plus, I the old one comes with an extra spool, which I really like. my vote would be...do what I did....purchase the current/old model....a great deal. save some money and get an extra spool... OHBASSIN Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Another one here who just bought the old at a great price.... Then immediately spent what I "saved" on lures lol. Go with the tried and true IMO. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 I would keep looking around for an older model, they are being phased out and you should be able to find them really cheap. another thing is you have the 35 listed which has a big spool capacity and in turn would waste a lot of line on. Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 Go for the deal, think about it this way. In a few years from now when the new generation goes on clearance, you can pick one up then on clearance. I always try to get the deal, don't care for the latest and greatest normally. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 X2 on the 35 model choice.. ? I use the 30 model and it is plenty of reel. Quote
Penguino Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I also have the 8230. It is an absolutely AMAZING reel for the price. I got mine for 49$ on clearance from dicks. I truly believe that it is untouchable against reels under the 99$ price range. You do know you can get it for 49$ at Gander Mountain after rebates and gift cards? Quote
bassin is addicting Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I think they are sold out at Gander Mountain. I just looked and couldn't find the Supreme listed any more. btw.. I bought 2 8230MGX's from there. great deal. Quote

I bought 2 8230MGX's from there. great deal. Agreed. I can see why they would be sold out quickely. Another option at your price would be the quantum accurist. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Quantum-Accurist-Spin-Reel-20SZ&i=773823 This is the older model, which is why you can get it for 35$. All I have heard about this reel is good. Quote
The Next KVD Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I just bought 2 of the old generation. One 30 and a 35. Did if for the $ savings and the spare spool! Quote
demonjd22 Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Thanks for the responses everyone, looks like I'm headed back to the store tomorrow to pick up the older model, if they have any left haha. Seems to be selling out pretty quick, worst comes to worst I'll have to settle for the new one lol. Quote

I got a Cabelas advertisement in the mail a few days ago saying the Pflueger Supreme XT will be on sale starting Saturday for $70! Quote
jbw252 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Stick wiith the "Tried & True" model. You can never be sure having the "Latest & Greatest". I have a President 6735, a Supreme 9025XT, and a Supreme 8025MG. Great reels for the money. Good luck shopping! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 10, 2015 Super User Posted March 10, 2015 Just a heads up. I got a Cabelas advertisement in the mail a few days ago saying the Pflueger Supreme XT will be on sale starting Saturday for $70! My Cabelas has it listed at $74 but read the red banner, "while supplies last" and it begins at 8am, well I was at my local Cabelas to pick up the Supreme I ordered because they didn't have one at the local store or the XT. I called customer service when I saw that flyer yesterday and I asked if the item isn't in the stores inventory can I get a rain check and I was told no, it is for store stock only and they actually checked to see if my store had any and the confirmed my earlier assessment, the store didn't have any in stock. Now, if I would have drove down to the store at 7am to make sure I could get to the fishing department on time and they didn't have it in stock, I would be pretty angry to put it mildly. Check store availability before making that same error. Quote

I hate that Cabelas website doesn't let you check local store stock. Quote

If you call the 800 number for customer service you can ask them if your local store has it in stock. My local store is severely understaffed and you can't always get someone to answer a phone so I called customer service to see if there was another way to find out and they told me anytime you want to know if your local store has something in their inventory all you have to do is call the 800 number and they can tell you.
