Super User A-Jay Posted March 8, 2015 Super User Posted March 8, 2015 That pretty cool and a little math indicates that ~ At 7-14 she grew at an average of just under 11.5 ounce per year And the 7-2 was a bit ahead of her at 12.6 ounces per years. A-Jay Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 8, 2015 Super User Posted March 8, 2015 Those northern strain? These bass were apparently caught some where in Maine - so I'm going to say - good chance. A-Jay 2 Quote

I would like to see a comparison in age of bass the same size where I live. Now I just have to catch that many 7+ lbers this year haha. We'll see. Where did you ship the scale samples to? What address, if you don't mind me asking? 1 Quote

scrutch Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I'm reading the same studies over @ Texas Share A Lunker. This kind of science I like Catt, Were you seeing that southern strain bass grow at a much faster rate? I would think that the northerners would have a longer lifespan at a slower growth rate. Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 9, 2015 Super User Posted March 9, 2015 Catt, Were you seeing that southern strain bass grow at a much faster rate? I would think that the northerners would have a longer lifespan at a slower growth rate. That's a given Quote
Mainebass1984 Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 All of the fish are northern strain with out a doubt. I caught them all in Maine. A coworker of mine was kind enough to take the initiative to have the spines sent to the lab that does all of our bass dorsal spine aging. If you want some of your fish aged you should contact your local fisheries biologist or their department. Finding out the age of such large bass this far north is very interesting. The data is also valuable from a scientific stand point as well. Not many fish over 7 lbs are sampled each year by the fisheries department through netting and electrofishing. Aging fish of significant size can reveal a lot about a fishery. 3 Quote

I do make a trip every now and then out to central Maine to fish around the Belgrade Lakes. I am not sure where Deerfield is ? I do know where Deering is. Within an hour drive of that area there is some of the best bass fishing in New England. There are countless lakes and ponds that have some big smallmouth and largemouth. Mousam, Sebago, Little Sebago, Little Ossipee, Arrowhead, are all places worth checking out and aren't to far away. Quote

Mainebass1984 Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 Deerfield is next to Paris and auburn if those ring a bell I grew in Brownfield, Me. Its about 35 from Paris. If your up by Paris then Thompson Lake is a good place to go for smallies. Androscoggin Lake by auburn is pretty good, actually really good for largemouth. A friend of mine has a camp in Buckfield. All the small ponds in the area have some pretty nice bass in them. Quote
