Super User FryDog62 Posted March 8, 2015 Super User Posted March 8, 2015 I have a rod I'm ready to string up... I primarily use it for casting/flipping jigs with trailers either as a swim jig or to flip into light/medium cover (wood, brush, rocks) but not heavy stuff. I have some 10 pound and 12 pound Yo-Zuri Hybrid I could use or maybe some heavier fluorocarbon. Could use braid but have found it to abrade a little over time. Looking for suggestions and recommendations. Thx, FD Quote
Robert Riley Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 That's mostly what I throw around here, I use 14lb Red Label FC. You could get away with 12lb Hybrid if you like flipping with Hybrid haha. The lake I fish doesn't have monsters or lots of cover and is pressured, so it's about lighter lines. So the difference between 12-14 isn't that big. If you aren't fishing similar areas, I'd beef up to 16-18. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Braid with fluoro leader all day for jigs. 1 Quote
ABW Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 I haven't had any problems with braid-fluoro leader. I use original Power Pro. Quote
Josh Smith Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Sufix 832 50lb with fluoro leader, or tie direct to the braid. I throw these in weeds mostly and the braid doesn't hurt these times. When it might be an issue, the leader's tied on. Sufix 832 is very smooth, as is Spiderwire Stealth (my other go-to). I understand Power Pro is pretty smooth as well. What do you mean by abrading? What's it wearing out? Josh Quote
G_money Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 I pitch docks a lot with light to moderate cover like you're talking about. I use Sunline Shooter and FC Sniper in 14 lb test for that scenario. I'm thinking of trying braid this year for a few techniques, with a flouro leader of course. I had too many issues with Yo-Zuri but that's my opinion, and others will swear by it, but it burnt me on a few big fish. Just my two cents. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted March 8, 2015 Author Super User Posted March 8, 2015 "What do you mean by abrading? What's it wearing out?" During a day of dragging jigs over rocks, branches, etc the braid starts to get a little frayed in the foot or so above the jig. I have found fluoro and Yozuri to be more abrasion resistant, even though you still have to check them for nicks... Quote

bigturtle Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Braid with 4-5 feet of mono or fluoro leader Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 For those of you that tie on fluorocarbon leaders - curious what pound test and how long are you tying your leaders? Depends on technique. For casting/pitching jigs in moderate cover/bladed jigs/spinnerbaits/swimjigs/t-rigs, I've been throwing 50 # smackdown braided mainline with 16# sniper fluoro leader 6-8 ft. For finesse on spinning tackle, I step it way down to 20-30# braid with a 8-10# fluoro leader. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 8, 2015 Super User Posted March 8, 2015 Try the #12 Yo-Zuri Hybrid and see how you like it, I do! Quote

Can you compare it to other braids you've used? Quote

The fraying you mention can lead to line failure. That is why a lot of people use a leader when fishing certain types of bottoms. I've snapped a new 1/2 oz. jig off on the cast with 30# braid when the line got wrapped around the tip, and I failed to notice. Don't know about you, but I can't afford to throw away $5-$6 on a cast. Wouldn't be so bad if I had caught a few dozen fish on it. Quote

Can you compare it to other braids you've used?As far as braids go, I started out with spiderwire and hated it. I thought about power pro, but when I went to feel of it at the store, it felt exactly the same so I said no to that as well. I bought some sunline FX2 and have stuck with round braids ever since. Smackdown is in the same category as FX2. Very little digging. I can recall it digging once, and it wasn't even that bad. Good color retention. It bleeds a little, but I never seem to mind it. Abrasion resistance is as good as it gets for braid. I throw it around rocks all day and pitch to some pretty heavy wood cover and never worry about it getting frayed. Castability is super good and its quiet due to its round profile. Quote
Schuyler co Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I've tried a number of lines and lines/leaders for jigs...I fish a shallow clear lake and now use 12lb Abrazx Quote
