Recently took inventory of all my rods, reels, lure and etc and put it in spreadsheets. I enjoyed doing this and feel it will help me utilize what I already have.

Anyways after looking over the spreadsheets it was obvious after 10 years I have sunk a decent amount of coin into this hobby. I decided to call the insurance company and purchase renters insurance. For $12 a month it seems like a decent investment to protect my investment in this sport along with other assets.

So is your gear covered? Has anyone ever had to use homeowners or renters insurance to replace stolen or damaged gear?

Both my Boat and my Home Owners insurance cover loss of my fishing gear.

Renter's/Homeowner's insurance also covers things stolen out of your car....auto insurance does not!

But as Mike noted, boat insurance have options for additional coverage on fishing gear.  Get it.  The "included" amount is never enough.

I have 5k worth of contents Inshurance on my boat. However I have that in electronics alone.

I have yet to make a claim, but every few years, I do a photo inventory of my gear. What I keep in the boat is videoed as I do a 360 so I can include all the equipment in the compartments, electronics, etc. I don't need to empty the compartments as the audio records what I say, so I just vocalize what's there. I'll likely do the same for my rods, reels, and tackle I keep in the house as it's actually easier for both me and my agent to go over.

You don't realize how much you have invested in tackle alone because it's purchased over years, eg. I have eight crankbait boxes with at least 125 cranks. That's almost $1K just in cranks.  Without some inventory or visual proof, it would be difficult to file an accurate claim.

This is quite true.

Many policies are going to have a deductible, it isn't always worth it to submit a claim.  If I had say $1500 of gear stolen with a $1000 deductible I wouldn't file a claim.  H.O. insurance companies have a reputation of canceling even with a small number of claims being filed.

Absolutely!!!  I'm another who has managed to sink more than a few bucks into gear the past 6 years.

Transferring the risk of pure direct loss to your fishing rods, reels and tackle is not expensive.

The problem is when you have a loss and you have to prove the cost of the items.

We don't keep receipts which may be needed to prove you had the item.

And the policy is usually on an "actual cash value" so don't expect to get a new replacement item.

Check with your agent to get the details before a loss occurs.

When my wife and i bought our house in july, we were shopping for home owner's insurance..... she was so mad, but my first and only question each time was in regards to my kayak/fishing gear!!

even when we rented, i made certain the renter's insurance would cover any losses due to theft/home damage.

it really depends on what type of homeowners policy you have as far as how fishing gear is covered. If your home qualifies for the best policy then you do have replacement cost just like you do on the rest of your personal property but it would be minus your deductible. But, you can schedule your fishing gear with an endorsement and have a 0 deductible. if you endorse your gear on your policy to have a 0 deductible typically you put a dollar amount with each item like a specific rod and a specific reel, then you use a blanket amount for things such as crank baits. you can buy a specific policy for your boat ,motor ,trailer, fishing gear and electronics that is not tied to your homeowners policy also

I had a $3k mountain bike stolen from me and I didn't have renter's insurance.  Never again.

Have the ranger insured but never thought l about the gear. The graphs are all locked down but thinking of the replacemment cost of an overflowing rod locker and baits is making me quite ill...Time to see what my insurance covers.
