fishangdood Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I was watching Wheels and Reels on World Fishing Network and part of my fishing spirit raged up like Goku turning Super Saiyan. Long story short, both teams were pretty much fishing live bait; so clickers were set and what not. In one take the camera pans to a rod that gets a hit. It looks to be a 6000 size Ambassadeur with a bait clicker. The the nascar fan, hosting one of the teams on his boat, sets the hook, but he doesn't switch off the clicker. As an Abu guy, or even for the general reel tech, that killed me. Let me here what shreds you up or grinds your gears. I'll be stuck in doors for pretty much the next day and a half (Marlyander). BooyahMan Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I've got one that's similar; on the odd occasion out on the rivers I'll hear people fighting fish on a centerpin with the clicker engaged. Not that there's anything wrong with it really, just bugs me a bit. Quote
ABW Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 When I see people holding spinning reels backwards (like you would a baitcaster or a spincast reel) I also saw a guy using a baitcaster upside down too... that was cringe worthy. 3 Quote
Jolly Green Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 What's wrong with setting the hook with the clicker on? Quote
fishangdood Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Jolly, nothing wrong with setting the hook. He just left it on the entire time. It'll kill the pinion gear that winds the idler cog which in turn winds the levelwind worm shaft. The only thing worse is if he left the clicker engaged when casting. Quote

This reminds me of another one that bugs me: upside down spinning reels. Apparently it's more intuitive to some people? Quote
zachb34 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Spinning reels upside down also bother me for whatever OCD reason. Another thing is when teens decide to fish behind my house while being as loud and obnoxious as possible, while leaving trash and mishandling fish. One kid thought it would be funny to let the fish flop in the street in traffic. Just gives the sport a bad rep and ruins it for the people who do the right thing 6 Quote
sprint61 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 When my friend says he will out fish me but all he does the whole time we are out is get hung or say "get us closer to the bank I can't cast that far". Oh yea he uses like 30lb hi vis catfish mono that looks like a slinky I don't think if a whale hit it he could tell. 2 Quote
Catch 22 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I was in an upper class restaurant waiting to be called for a table. There were lots of paintings of the nautical nature hanging. but one got my attention more than the others. I started laughing to the puzzlement of my wife. There was a huge fantastic painting of a fisherman on a rock jetty with a phenomenal sunset and a boat in the background. The fisherman`s spinning reel was distinctly upside down. 2 Quote

Shockwave Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I'd have to say that the one thing that almost sends me into a rage is when I'm in the boat fishing and I'm thirty or forty yards from the shore fishing and another boater decides that instead of going the route of the wide open body of water behind me, it's in his (or her) best interest to blow by me at wide open throttle between me and the shore!! 2 Quote
HookdUP Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 What really grinds my gears is when im fishing with someone shallow and they're making the biggest splashes with their bait or moving around a lot in the boat Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted March 5, 2015 Super User Posted March 5, 2015 Seeing someone lay a $200.+ reel down on a pile of rocks, or pavement. Hootie Quote
coak Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Seeing someone lay a $200.+ reel down on a pile of rocks, or pavement. Hootie I'm guilty of this......no boat for me and I primarily wade rivers.....but I hardly ever re-sell my gear though Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I'm guilty of this......no boat for me and I primarily wade rivers.....but I hardly ever re-sell my gear though I'm guilty of this too (laying a rod down on rocks). When I fish from shore with 2 rods I have no choice, but when I set a rod down you'd think it was a stick of dynamite I'm so gentle. I made the mistake last year of letting my son try out my new GLX spinning rod and when he set it down on some rocks it slid a couple feet down an incline. Needless to say he hasn't touched it since... 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 5, 2015 Super User Posted March 5, 2015 Some men cry easy. no i don't none of these make we want to cry.... what makes we want to cry? seeing someone pulling a boat or with the kayak loaded up while i'm on my way to/from work..... nothing hurts worse! 2 Quote

0119 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I hate seeing pro's simply drop their rig on the deck but more than anything I hate to see folks foolishly dunk their reel just to get a trophy pic for the camera. Fly fishermen are the worst considering their super simple reels cost at least 3 or 4 hundred. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 5, 2015 Super User Posted March 5, 2015 Most decent fly reels aren't affected by submersion, unless it's below freezing. Quote
0119 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 So they say. But to get a truly sealed one your paying the price of new Stella/Loomis combo. It just makes me cry to see that kinda $ dunked into a river bed full of rock. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 5, 2015 Super User Posted March 5, 2015 I cried at the end of Old Yeller. 1 Quote
21farms Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 oh man, where do i start? 1) watching the host of a fishing show hold a fish out of water for a loooong time while explaining the bait and technique used to catch it...it's almost as if he feels he has no credibility unless he's holding a fish in his hand to prove that he knows how to fish. geez, if you're gonna release the fish, then just release it and then explain the technique, etc. 2) when anglers make a big show out of releasing a fish...they kiss it, touch it all over saying what a beautiful fish it is, then hold it by it's belly as they lower it into the water, caress the fish as it swims out of his hands (all the while stripping the fish of the slime coat that protects it from infections, harmful bacteria and parasites). 4 Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 5, 2015 Super User Posted March 5, 2015 Not fishing related but when i see crab ads and they have a little wooden mallet beside them,,,thats downright stupid Quote
