JoyoftheCatch Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Hey guys, I am looking to get a new rod, preferably a medium or medium heavy for my moving baits(spinnerbait, buzz bait, soft plastic swim baits, etc.) I have been extremely interested in the Duckett Ghost and the St. Croix Mojo rods. I am looking for some advice. What are your past experiences with these rods? What do you recommend? Or are there any other good rods in that price range with the sensitivity and reliability of these two rods? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -JoyoftheCatch Quote
gunsmoke Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I'm not a fan of either but have fished both and can say IMHO and experience the duckett is a more sensitive and responsive rod. For ME the mojo was like fishing with a 2x4 with string. Quote
JoyoftheCatch Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Thanks for the response. Do you know anything in the 100-125 price range that is any better? I don't have a lot of experience with casting rods other than my two Powell Diesels which I love for the price. I just want to add to the collection as I am going to be fishing some tournaments this year. Quote
SenkoGuru Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 The *** *** has a very good blank but as a whole it is not as good as the Duckett Ghost and the Veritas isn't as good as either one. The Ghost is a very good rod I'm simply not sure why it doesn't get more credit. It is selling like hot cakes and Duckett makes very nice fishing rods. I think you can still find some Duckett Micro Magic for around $100 if you search the internet. I also think fi you search you can find the Daiwa Tatula rods around $100 and those are very nice sticks too. If I was you I would try to find the Daiwa Tatula, then Duckett rods, then maybe look at the *** Omens but you should try to hold the *** before buying it, a lot of people (Myself included) can not fish them because the handle is just simply terrible. You could also look at the new Abu Garcia "IKE" Series of rods, I have no XP with those so I can't really tell you if they are good or not but They do look very nice at their price point. Good luck and please let us know what you decide to buy and how you like it. 1 Quote
JoyoftheCatch Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Thanks for the input guys, I will look into the tatula for sure. Quote
Blues19 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I agree with gunsmoke about the Mojo. That sucker is a rod regret purchasing. I prefer my *** and Veritas to it. I am very interested in the Ghost, but I am extremely happy with my *** and Veritas rods. As SenkoGuru said, some people hate the *** handle. however I really like it. I have nothing bad to say about the ***, its one of my favorite rods. I would suggest the Veritas and *** for sure if there is something you end up not liking about the Ghost, i have not used the ghost so I can not say anything about it. I have however heard they yellow quite a bit. Quote
JoyoftheCatch Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Thanks, I have heard that they yellow up too. I am not as worried about aesthetics as I am about performance. I will look into the ***. Thanks for the reply Quote
robster80 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 i read in somewhere in a forum that duckett fixed the yellowing of the ghost problem and newer ones dont have that issue. Quote

Can't go wrong Quote
JoyoftheCatch Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 has anyone had experience with carrot stix? I am browsing the tackle warehouse website looking through all of the brands. I heard that they were once part of Duckett or they were made very similar. Anyone know how they fish? Quote
SenkoGuru Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I bought two of the first model Duckett Ghost Rod's that came out and they both turned Yellow on me. I contacted Duckett and was told that they had used a bad batch of clear coat and it had turned them yellow. They replaced both of my rods and it was even after the warranty was over but they did not want me fishing with ugly rods so they replaced them and I got a new warranty on the new ones. Pretty good I thought. I was told it was only the first batch that turns yellow and the problem has been fixed. Boyd Duckett was with Carrot Sticks when they first came out but the company began to cut corners on the Carrot Sticks and Boyd would have nothing more to do with them and he left to start his own company Duckett Fishing. I would advise not to buy a Carrot stick, I do not know anything about the new carrot sticks but I am told if something happens they will not stand behind them so you really get no warranty with them, now this may or may not be the truth I really do not know but I have heard a lot of people saying it. With so many options out there at your price point I would not fool around with Carrot Sticks. The ***'s have a very good blank in that price range and I really wish *** would change the handle on those Rod's. I bought a 7'3" Medium *** and it was a very nice blank, I really did not like the REC guides but I could deal with them. The problem was the handle, it was so uncomfortable to fish with that I had to sell the rod. I liked it too and would have loved to have been able to keep it and fish but they hurt my hand after a while of fishing with them. 2 Quote

I dont see why someone else tried to come in and give it another go around. Sounds like they still have similar customer service though. Quote

Yes, I agree, That is why I was saying it may or may not be the truth. I really do not know and it would be up to that person if they wanted to spend their hard earned money on a Carrot Stick. I would not buy any of their new sticks but I still have a few of there first model Carrot sticks, the 21 Carrot Gold. They are pretty good rods, imo. I have not broken any but I've heard many horror stories about people who did. Quote
MrM_vs_Wild Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Not sure if you have considered any Okuma rods but I have a few of their scott martin TCS rods and they are extremely light weight and sensitive. I honestly love them. They come with a limited lifetime warranty too. I got my 7'1'' HF online at walmart for 99 bucks. They sell for 159 on tackle warehouse. They have a few other models too if you don't want to go with the TCS series. Don't get me wrong though, I love my St. Croixs. I have an an Avid 70MXF casting rod that I absolutely love... but its 200 bucks all day. I have the mojo bass 70MHF "spinnerbait" model too that I typically use for flipping and pitching since the tip is so stiff that it just doesn't cast spinnerbaits and jigs as well as I'd like. I use my Okuma for spinnerbaits and jigs. I also have a premier crankbait rod 70MHM and I love that as well. I just think that if you can get the Okuma for under 110 bucks its a far superior rod than any in the mojo line. All in all I much prefer St. Croix but only if I'm not worried about the money. Quote

Dobyns has a series coming out in May I believe that are close to 100 as well. Looks promising. Probably be backordered til the end of time but we shall see..lol Quote
MDBowHunter Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I have a St Croix Mojo and I like it a lot, as far as sensitivity. When I'm running a spinnerbait, I can actually feel when the blades stop turning as the fish is biting the bait. I'm don't know how much more sensitive it could be, or why would it need be since your using it for spinnerbaits and such. Quote
