This coming week there is a Field and Stream store opening near me in suburb of Detroit, MI., and is managed by Dick's Sporting goods.

Anyone have one of these near them?  (note it is not affiliated with the magazine of the same name)

I'm curious to go check it out when it opens to see what they carry, prices, etc.

From newspaper last July, 2014:  They announced they will also be opening Field and Stream stores in Columbus, Ohio and Cary, North Carolina in September 2015.  They already have stores in Pa and Ky.  (In same article Gander stated it has or will open 20 more stores across USA in 2014-2015)

Michigan is an outdoor paradise with lots of stores to choose from:  There is a Dick's across the street from the upcoming Field and Stream and a Dunhams down the street.  Gander Mountain is a little drive and Bass Pro is about 20 minutes.  Cabelas is over an hour away from the tri-county area of Metro Detroit.

Personally I like BPS and some shops on the web.  I like Cabela's too, but is a long drive.

I also checked out a discount store with buyouts, over runs etc., called Ollies.  They had some fishing and hunting gear.  The fishing gear was some tackle, lures, and a few rod choices.

So, waiting on Field and Stream store to see what they offer.  Only 10 minutes away.

Let me know if you have one near you and what you think.

Thanks

That Cabela's is so worth the drive though. That Great Lakes bar near it has super good food and you can take your wife/girlfriend to the Russel Stover outlet store across the street to make up for all the tackle purchasing.

I'm going to check out the F&S when it opens. I've heard good things from some members here.

As a kid I remember Dunhams quite well.  The original store was on Northwestern Hwy and Orchard Lake rd, a tiny little store front Mom & Pops with a live bait shack in the rear.  That area of Oakland County has scores of lakes, back in the 50's almost every one of them had a boat livery, today it's all private homes and no more cottages.

I get very frustrated being in Traverse City. I am at the epicenter of a trophy smallmouth fishery. Literally, there are 10 lakes I can go to and catch 6-7 pound smallies any day(excluding January-March), and the only real option I have for fishing gear is a Gander Mountain. I love the place, but it gets pretty stale after the third trip there in a week. There is also much more of an emphasis on big water tackle than bass gear. I don't know why Bass Pro wouldn't jump at the chance to open up their second store up here.

What city gets that Field and Stream? I live in Ypsi, so I'm only 20 minutes from Cabelas. BPS on the other hand is an hour away, both the GLC and Ohio locations.

I've been in the new one that just opened (a year or two ago)  in the Millcreek Marketplace, adjacent to Millcreek Mall, in Erie, Pa.

My description is IMPRESSIVE. Big, well stocked, has EVERYTHING & More.

Enjoy.

Yes, I have one half a mile from my house and I pass it every day going to and from work. It's gotten to be an expensive drive from work because of this...

One opened recently near me in Rochester, NY.  Also across the parking lot from a Dick's.  A Gander Mountain is about a block away.  I've been to the new F&S a few times already.  It's nice and has a good selection.  I'd guesstimate about 2/3s the size of the BPS about an hour away.  The F&S has a much more extensive collection of fly fishing gear, though.

Frankly, I'm concerned about saturation.  While neither Dick's nor Gander Mountain has everything I need (a/k/a want), they've got plenty.  And, when I just want to guarantee that I get exactly what I want, I put in a TW order.  In addition to the BPS about an hour away, they're building a new BPS about 10 minutes from me (there goes the budget...).  Additionally, there is a new Cabellas in Buffalo, an hour the other way.  It just seems like a lot of stores in a pretty small area, and some of them are just not going to survive.  My gut sense is that the new F&S is destined to be the loser in that group.

Troy near Oakland Mall, right off I-75. Probably an hour and change from Ypsi.

Yeah, tackle store options up there are pretty slim. I ran out of Baby Rage Craws up there last July and was very upset to find them $8 at Gander Mountain. However, they sold me some clearance Yum Craw Papi's that worked . . . in a pinch.  :battery-062:

One just opened about 45 mins away from me. I  now have a Cabelas's, 2 Gander Mtns, Mulitple Dick's and a Field and Stream all less than an hour away (with a Bass pro about and hour and a half drive away, and another soon to be closer) Here is how I rank them based on my own personal tastes, I'll exclude the BPS that is a little further away because I don't go there but maybe 1-2 times a year:

Bass specific Tackle (soft plastics/cranks/etc.): #1 F&S, #2 Gander, #3 Cabelas #4 Dicks

Multi species tackle: #1 Cabela's , #2 Gander, #3 F&S #4 Dicks

Ice fishing: #1 Cabela's, #2 Gander, #3 F&S #4 Dicks

Rod/Reel Selection: #1 Cabela's, #2 F&S, #3 Gander, # 4 Dicks

Marine/Boat stuff: #1 Cabela's #2 Gander, #3 F&S, # 4 Dicks

General Pricing on above items: #1 F&S, #2 Dicks, #3 Cabela's, #4 Gander

And for non-fishing stuff I am interested in:

Firearms inventory: #1 Cabela's, #2 Gander, #3 F&S, #4 Dicks

Ammo selection/inventory: #1 Cabela's, #2 Gander, #3 F&S, #4 Dicks

Acc./targets/cleaning stuff/mags/etc....#1 Cabela's, #2 Gander, #3 F&S, #4 Dicks

Price: #1 Cabela's, #2 F&S, #3 Dicks, #4 Gander

How was the clearance category in F&S?

About the same as the rest.

Perfect, this has just turned my drive down to BPS into a threesome. BPS, DICKS and Field and Stream. My kind of field trip.

Good to see all the replies.  Thanks to everyone for sharing.  Nice to know I can expect Field and Stream to have a good selection.  I agree on TW on the Internet-usually decent prices.  Also the Tackle Outlet Store on web sometimes I find has good deals.

Next week temps looking good to warm up and not freeze in garage to start getting things ready for open water.  Anxious?  YES!

Field and Stream store is open today March 11 in Troy michigan. Grand opening week of March 26. I stopped in at lunch and got a couple shadow raps.

Good looking store. Yes about 2/3 size of BPS. Prices were competitive. Less fishing selection but some higher end rods. Hunting was large area. They have free rewards program. Buy something then take survey on their website and get $10 off next purchase of $50 or more. Not bad. Overall I was impressed and close to home than BPS for me. Though not a lot of boating items. Check it out.

I just wanted to inform you fisherman that Field and Stream is more part of the magazine. It is owned by Dick's. THEY OPENED TODAY but most already knew that. Since there owned by Dick's they have the same point system. I don't think there interchangeable.

Good news that it is open, planning on making a milk run to BPS and F&S sometime in the near future. Gander Mountain is the only thing in the Flint area.

The tackle store just north of Davidson is it still around

The Grab Bag? Not much in Bass tackle there.
