caudburns11 Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Along with bass fishing I've been looking into pike fishing. And I want to know what would be a good all around rod and reel to buy? I don't want anything to pricey, somewhere around the $100 mark since I won't be using it as much. I want to get a baitcasting reel, should I look at the gear ratios the same way I do when I'm bass fishing? I was also thinking I would be able to use my bass rods and reels, would those work fine? I have a 5.4:1 Lew's Super Duty on a 6'6" MM rod I use for treble hook lures and a 6.4:1 Abu Garcia Orra 2SX on a 6'6" MH rod I use for soft plastics, rigs, and spinnerbaits until I can get a setup specific for that. Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 4, 2015 Super User Posted March 4, 2015 Just about any bass fishing combo should do nicely - depending on the size of the pike in your water of course. A 7' MH baitcasting rod will do the trick. BPS or Cabelas has several models in your price range. Match it with an Ambassadeur 5500-C and a quality 17# test monofilament line and you're good to go. This rig can serve you several purposes. Makes a great frog rod too. Oh, and don't forget a 12" - 18" steel leader! Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Yes sir, bassin gear in MH will get the job done. If you know there are pike in the 36"+ range in the lake, be sure to have a reel that holds plenty of line. Spinnerbaits and spoons will get you plenty of action. I have a tackle box devoted to them and most of the lures in it are bassin' stuff. That and some smaller muskie baits, but the rods are both 7ft. MH paired with Daiwa Advantage reels and 30lb. braid. Don't forget the leader! Quote
Super User Angry John Posted March 4, 2015 Super User Posted March 4, 2015 The reel will be fine. You have a ton of bass options as a frog jig or flipping stick will all work great. I would look 7'3-8' for length. Quote
