Looking to respool my ultralight rod/reel today. Wondering if this is a good idea to do this with monofilament. I already have the 6lb mono (in my last post) but im concerened if i spool it now that by the time ice out rolls around it will already have memory on it. Thoughts?

I wouldn't spool on unless you have some KVD line and lure, then go ahead if you want to take the extra step to spray it on later. Kind of a waste, imo though

What is KVD Line and lure?

One of the best line conditioners. It lessens memory and "cleans" the line of outside particles. It also supposedly improves casting distance.

Line conditioner for your mono and fluoro. You can use it on braid but it doesn't really help.

When I was using a lot of mono for panfishing, I'd take off about a cast and a half after every 2 months of fishing. Sometimes even more frequently. But these days I've switch to braid with a fluorocarbon leader. Now I never re-spool. I just change the leader as the need arises.

I too would recommend the KVD spray if you stick with mono.

6# mono will be fine, though I don't consider that UL. Something like 2-3lb. Is more like UL. It doesn't really matter when you use KVD L&L. If not, then wait.

If you're concerned with memory, you can still spool now and do one of three things after ice out. Remove the spool and let it soak in a glass of water, tie or hook your line to a tree and walk off 30yards of line under tension followed by pulling by hand to stretch out the line, or just start fishing with it.  6lb. isn't going to be springing off your spool, just retaining the coils which may reduce casting distance at first.

I'd probably wait a little bit before you spool it up. I guess it kind of depends on what you're going to be throwing though. If you're using your UL to fish with live bait and a bobber it won't really have much of an effect, where as if you're casting light baits you won't have as good of performance if your line has a bunch of memory.

It only takes a moment to spool a ul reel, no reason to do it until you're ready to use it.
