DocNsanE Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Wondering if anyone has used a Tatula for bottom contact baits, and if so: - Which model? - How is it? (just your opinion, if you have other rods to compare to that may help) - How much did you pay for it? - If you could do it again, would you buy the same rod or something else? If something else, what would have in mind? Thanks! Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 yes, i use mine for trigs/smaller jigs and i like it. i have a 6'10"MHF paired with a curado 51e. i actually have 2 of these rods and use the other for spinnerbait/buzzbaits/chatterbaits. i prefer to use it for the moving baits, but it works great for bottom contact as well. i paid pretty close to retail for both of them (had some credits/dollars at BPS) and i am about 50/50 as to whether i would do it again. there are a lot of other rods i would likely have taken, but the selection at BPS was limited at the time of purchase. honestly, i'm happy with the rods and would not hesitate to use them as bottom contact rods. DocNsanE Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Thanks for the honest opinion! Any others? Quote
jtesch Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I have several and use them for all kinds of bottom contact baits. All of mine are MH or H so I'm not fishing small baits but I think they do a great job at 3/8 or up. I prefer them to my Crucials and any other rod I own in the 150-200 range. I love the 7'1" MH XF for all kinds of baits . It's very sensitive, light and has a ton of backbone. The 7'4" XF H frog rod is a killer heavy jig rod also. Read the Tackle Tour review and you'll be impressed Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 I have a 6'10" MHF. I'd call it a MH+. A bit more than most MH rods, but not a Croix MH. The fast rating for action is right on. I have a Zillion on mine, and the combo is dedicated to T-rigs. I paid MSRP for mine, something I rarely do. I like everything about it. Except the aluminum nut on the reel seat, that is. That is one stupid-arsed idea I wish had never gained any traction. 1 Quote

Read the Tackle Tour review and you'll be impressed Would you say the 7'1" MHXF performs well for its entire weight range (1/4oz to 1oz)? Thanks guys for your valuable insight! I have indeed read the review at tackletour and it's the main reason I'm looking at a tatula rod to pair with my tatula reel. However, there are other rods in the same price range that also look fantastic. I figured if I got some first hand accounts of happy owners it would help a lot in sealing the deal on this decision. If a lot of people would have come here and said they would have bought something different if they had to do it over again I would have certainly been open to their feedback. So far your responses have been honest and mostly positive and I am feeling more and more comfortable with this choice. I was considering the 7'1" MHXF or the 7'2" HF. I mostly throw under 3/4oz and don't flip any heavy mats so I was already leaning towards the 7'1". Not sure how much more distance that 1" would give me on a pitch but I doubt it would be much. kingmotorboat Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I use my 6 10 mh tatula rod for jig and t rig with a tatula type r and love it Quote
jtesch Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 The 7'1" xh might be a reach down at a1/4 ounce but it might do the job. I paid retail for mine. Hard to hide a 7 foot rod shipped to the house from my wife so I had to do BPS Quote
jtesch Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I also have the 7'2" H F and it is a totally different animal then the 7'1" rod. the 7'2" rod is a beast of a rod that I wouldn't use for less then 3/8 and more like 1/2 or better. I have the 7'2" MH and it is even really stout. You will love the 7'1" it has a nice light tip for feel but a ton of power. Quote
DocNsanE Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 jtesch thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with me! would you feel comfortable fishing submerged weeds are fallen timber with that 7'1"? I currently get away with it on a 7' MH spinning bps extreme, I'd be surprised if the tatula didn't have at least as much back bone if not more than that? Quote
jtesch Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I use it to throw texas rigged 8" lizards and magnum super flukes through heavy weed growth and it works like a dream. it can muscle a bass out of thick stuff. That being said, I wouldn't be real comfortable fishing heavy wood with any thing less then a H or XH rod. The 7'1" is a great all purpose rod that will handle everything but the real heavy stuff. I have 20 rods that are in the $150-$250 range and other than my Cumaras, the Tatulas are my favorite rods. Quote

You have no idea how many times I've done this same thing just to hide the purchase from my wife, all the while kicking myself for paying to much for a rod I could have bought for way less. Quote
jtesch Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I was in heaven last year when my wife was out of town for 4 days a week almost all summer. I had my Tackle Warehouse delivery schedule down to the hour Quote
