Toss out labels like M / MH etc. They're subjective and don't mean much in the big picture. If you're casting short to targets in heavy cover a rod rated for 1/4-3/4 or so should work fine. If you want to cast small jigs and plastics some distance, a rod with a lower lure weight range surrounding 1/4 will likely load and cast better. A number of modern blanks combine the tip to cast well with impressive power in the butt to fight fish. If you fully palm your reel, it's sitting right at the fulcrum point and should have very minimal affect on feel / balance except for in overall weight.

Dobyns Champion 702C or 703C.

Fits all your criteria:

7 feet.

Perfect for 1/4 oz baits.

Most balanced rods I ever used.

Will cost you $250 though. I got mine for $180 at a fishing convention. Bargain with the vendors they'll take up to 30%-40% off.

Haha guess I missed that part! I'd go about 3 or 4 power w/lilly pads. He could go with a true MH (5 power) BUT it's not gonna cast those light baits very good.

Of the rods I've used I would recommend the DX 744. All the Dobyns rods I have balance/balanced well with any reel I put on them. The 4 power in the DX line up is exremely versatile IMO. I was able to throw weightless stickworms and threw a lot of 1/4oz t rigs and jigs + trailer with this rod, but could handle up to 3/4oz jigs in open water comfortably for me. It also has enough meat to get fish out of some thicker stuff if you run into it.

Thank y'all for all of the info and suggestions. I'm picking the reel up tomorrow morning and I found a rod that I haven't used in a while to try it out on. It's a Shimano Crucial 7'2" mh/ef 1/4-1/2oz. It weighs about 4 1/4oz. Should give me a baseline. Keep the suggestions rolling in!!

Had a chance to mount the Aldebaron on a 803c NRX rod today and thought it felt pretty good. The shop offered me a good deal on the rod, but I held off for now. Talking with a rod builder about a K2 build. It's gonna cost me.........

Finally made a decision on the rod. Just ordered a custom 6'8" Phenix K2. I'm really excited!

Rodgeeks C473MHXS is rated for 1/4-3/4. Its the only MH blank I've ever seen rated down to 1/4. I just got one in yesterday. Haven't had a chance to play with it much, but it has a very soft tip for MH and gets to the backbone pretty fast. Might be what you're looking for.

Just about every MH is rated 1/4-3/4

Really? Any I'm familiar with are rated at 3/8 on the bottom end and do a poor job of throwing that. This Rodgeeks is the first one ive felt that might actually be good at throwing lighter stuff.

I had to go look and the Rod's I looked at were all listed at 1/4 to 3/4. Very few were not and Powell Max 3d even had a few Heavy action listed at 1/4 to 1 Oz.

The K2 blank I chose is a 6'8" 3 power medium/fast. It'll cast a 3/16oz lure nicely. Going with Fuji Titanium/Torzite semi micro guides and an Alps MVT reel seat. Gonna keep the rest of the build basic, so no extra weight. I want the blank to keep the raw look which should look great with the reel that will call it home. I'll update as soon as I get some pics. Should have it in about 3 weeks.

I ordered the alps mvt toray reel seat for my build as well with semi micro guides. The graphite on your reel seat is from the same company who makes the graphite for k2 blanks, which is Toray. They are supposed to be some really crisp blanks and top of the line sensitive. Should be perfect for what you plan on using it for. K2's are some pretty blanks that would look good with a carbon fiber handle. Feel free to do a review when you get the rod with some pics ☺

Awesome, interested in that same reel seat myself. Will be very interested to hear about the whole build and how comfortable that reel seat is.

Still getting ideas. Will be cork for sure. Probably just a a mixture of light and dark rings.

Just changed from the 683ml blank to the 684mh blank. I fish around vegetation pretty much wherever I fish, so I went with a little more backbone versus the 683ml. It should suit me well!
