Ordered a 2015 Aldebaron to throw lighter t rigs, jigs, and weightless plastics. I'll probably never go under 1/4oz. I'm usually fishing around lilly pads or dollar bonnets and hydrilla. I already own a few of the MB xx rods and would like to keep this rod in the same series, but don't think its possible. I've been looking at the Kistler Helium 3 and Z Bone(medium/fast) rods as well as Loomis, St. Croix, and others. Need it to be sensitive and must balance with the Aldebaron. Was also thinking of having a custom rod built. Decisions.......

My vote goes to custom! Especially for balance purposes with that new oober light reel. How long of a stick are you after? Or maybe wait for the new 13 Archangel to hit the shelves. That would be a sick combo!

Mike at DVT built a rod for me last year. Give him a call and discuss

what it is you are looking for in the new rod. He will work with your

budget or offer suggestions for the ultimate rod.

I was thinking 6'6"-7'0". Custom would be more of a last resort for me because of the usual wait. I really want this combo ready to fish in a week or two.

13 *** black.

If it fits your hand you will not find more rod for the price. Ti recoils, ultra light blanks with tons of backbone and a nice springy tip section that let's you feel and cast baits all the way to the bottom of their rating. Very versatile rods for sure.

What Orochi XX do you already own? Are you talking 1/4 oz total weight, or 1/4 oz jig plus trailer?

Phenix m1s are the best the 7'2 MH is a sweet rod for what your talking about.

I'd like to be able to throw 1/4 oz baits, period. I'm not dead set on a medium heavy rod, I just know eventually a medium rod will be overpowered by the type of cover in my area. The Orochi XX rods I have are the Extreme Mission Type F, Tour Versatile, and the Perfect Pitch. I will soon own the Diablo Type R as well. I really enjoy the Orochi XX line of rods.

With the new aldebaran it's going to be hard to find a stock rod to balanceMy 803 NRX which is a very light rod needs around 6oz or so to have it where I like it. If not custom you're going to need something in the 6' length range thats light. It's cool how light the reel is but I feel that it's almost getting out of hand with how light they are for balance reasons. Maybe try to find a used Cumulus?

I agree with you on the weight topic. I've been having wrist issues lately and wanted to try the lightest reel I could find. I'm loving my Metaniums, but wanted to go even lighter. I was having lots of trouble with choosing the best rod for my situation and was hoping someone could get me into a production rod with this thread.

There are a lot of very lightweight production rods that will keep the weight of your combo down. However the balance may be off to you. I'm not sure what your preference is there. Look at some of the rods from Dobyns in the champion and extreme series.

I'm not super picky about balance. I just know my 3 favorite rigs feel so much better than a friends. I can tell the most difference between our frog setups. I use a Perfect Pitch/Curado I and he uses a Skeet Reese 7'6" flipping stick/Curado G. That rod weighs a ton and takes so much effort to cast and work. I was looking at the Kistler Z Bones and saw the 6'9" 3 power mh/f listed at 3.5 oz and is rated for 1/8 oz-3/4 oz. Unfortunately it's out of stock.

It works great! But I use it for 5-6" Senkos and medium sized t rigs in mostly open water. It's 7'5", so it's not exactly ideal for throwing sidearm under branches, etc....

I would suggest trying to find a Shimano Cumulus 6'10 MH. I have that rod and it's nice. It's not really a MH, more like a Medium but has the backbone also. It is super light but I wouldn't say it's a super balance rod Though but it's so light you don't really care. The rod is around 3.5 oz, just don't remember the exact weight.

My guess is this rod with the 15 Aldebaran it'll be so light that even though it's not the best balancing rod you wouldn't even care. Sorry not selling my rod :)

With 1/4oz I use a medium, under MH's I generally dont go under 3/8oz.

Are you set on a MH for the lighter stuff?

Yeah, but you only fish St. Croix, so maybe another brand MH could handle 1/4 oz. okay.  I hear Bucoo rods fish light.  I've got a 7'6" MHF Villain rated down to 3/8 oz. and I don't even like going down to 1/2 oz. on it.

OP sorry but I got no help.  You are talking rods way above my price range.

On the Orochi XX front you've got a great selection, I'm looking forward to adding a Perfect Pitch one day. While I have practiced pitching a 1/4 oz practice plug on my Diablo Spec R paired with a Met and it worked I'm not sure it would cast that weight well. In the XX line you're only casting rod option that is solidly down to 1/4 oz tw is the Jerkbait Special. I just got one at Christmas time, and it's actually a really versatile stick. I have only fished it twice but think I'm gonna love it for a Jerkbait and top water stick. Surprisingly though it actually fishes a 3/16 oz finish jig with small trailer pretty well. I was able to set the hook just fine and work the jig along a rocky dam. Now if this is strictly a bottom contact fixed hook rod it likely wouldn't be your first pick. I'd suggest you call Gary at the Tackle Trap for addl input on any MB options, night be something in the X4 lineup. I also have a Spinnerbait Special but never tried it down to 1/4 oz.

If you like the JDM look you might consider the new Shimano Zodias, early reports are good and I think they have some Med and Med light powers in casting sticks.

I can also recommend a St Croix in the 6'8" M/XF model of your choosing. I have the LTB in this taper and was called the "top water/flick shake rod". It handles top water nicely but also all kinds of plastics and light jigs. It's a nice length for working close to cover and the tip action I find great for under roll casts and pitches. I think this version is available as a LTB or Leg Extreme. My LTB balances great with a 6.5 oz reel and is very comfortable. I have the older version with the eCS reel seat.

You could also look at the 7'1" MH/XF versions as well, bit more power but really well reviewed by others, rated 1/4-3/4. I've never used one but TackleTour did a review of the Leg Extreme version last year.

Good luck and update us on how it works out.

I have the Cumulus rod noted above. The rod weight is around 3 ounces. Literally one of the lightest rods of its time and today for that matter. Take the same rod today and strip the guides off it and use smaller and lighter guides and it would be even more sensitive and better balanced and probably a few grams lighter. It's a specialty rod that if you fish cover it wouldn't be the most ideal rod.

I am not really sure which direction to steer the OP. Rod length, weights of baits being thrown, and price point should have more options but they arent jumping out...

Gary at the Tackletrap would be my source if I was buying Megabass rods.

Scratch what I recommended. I didn't read it throughly with Lilly pads and cover. I was just seeing 1/4 oz lol. It's going to be a tough one if you're picky with balance. Also fishing cover like that majority of the rods with power will make casting accuracy poor.

I'm really starting to lean towards the Kistler Z Bone 7'0" mh/fast. Weighs 3.6oz and is rated for 1/8-3/4oz. Seems look a really good bottom contact/jack of all trades rod. What do y'all think? Should I go with a medium? My brain is hurting......

Posted

If you're gonna go Z Bone consider the custom route. Fuji titanium alconites shouldn't set you back to much and will keep the weight down. I still suggest custom. The wait will be worth the trade off for balance. Just fish the reel on a stick you already have in the meantime. Keep the thread and deco to an absolute minimum. Use guides that are only big enough to pass a leader knot through. Shop blanks and look at the weights. The new Shimano Zodias may be an option

I own the Orochi xx EMTF and I own the Kistler Z bone 3LE 7'3 MH and I can tell you the Z Bone IS the rod you are looking for. I also love my Megabass but the Z Bone is more sensitive. It is more of a plain Jane type rod, the Orochi looks a lot better and has better components but it isn't as sensitive. The Z bone is a 46 Ton NFC blank and those NFC blanks are no joke at all. You could go custom Z Bone but you're in for a long wait but the 2014 Z Bones have been phased out and the 2015 one's are coming in so if you do not have a place to buy local like I did then you may be in for a long wait on a Z Bone any way. If buying from Kistler, I would also call and make sure which NFC blank they are using on the rod I wanted. Good luck.

Also, I would stay far away from Dobyn's  I'm not sure if you have any Experience with Dobyn's but their DX is a joke if you compare it to a Z bone and laughable when compaired to the Megabass. It is not worth what they are asking for it IMO.

^^^this or get mike from DVT to make you a custom out of NFC's 705 HM. Its the same blank as the older MB 843 IMX.
