How does it even go on for that long? almost 200,000 pounds of illegally harvested stripers from the Chesapeake Bay. In nearly 4-5 years time, apparently he had some help too...and people wonder why the regulations for keeping them are so strict and vary throughout the year

A Maryland fisherman has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison for his role in the illegal harvesting nearly 200,000 pounds of striped bass.

Prosecutors said U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett sentenced him to spend six months on home detention after he completes his prison sentence. Hayden has been ordered to pay nearly $500,000 in restitution to the state as well as a $40,000 fine.

I have a chartered trip for stripers planned on the Chesapeake Bay, via my boss at work and im invited, in mid-May...hope there is some fish left. last time i went in May i caught my personal best 42 inch striper....

I've never seen striper on a Restraunt menu, are they being marketed differently? I wonder...

Rock Fish on menus.

This guy's partner is already doing a year a day.

This is a HOT topic in the Chesapeake Bay fishing circles.

Wow. Ridiculous amount of fish.

That's a lot of $$ in restitution to pay back.

The most astounding thing to me is the approval of the community as a whole. They see nothing wrong with these absurd violations. Bunch of smibs

These guys stole from everyone on the  east coast including there own commercial brothers.I hope they suffer greatly.

As you probably read,  "everyone does it".   They alluded to another 10-12 boats out there at the same time they were doing the same thing.

Selling to legitimate markets.(illegally fixing the books on both ends)

The people that thought it was okay was the commercial fishing community where they lived and worked.

They were setting illegal nets off season, catching ,and selling rockfish. Its not the first for this area or several other places on the east coast. The demise of this fish has caused a 25 % coast wide reduction for 2015 partly due to illegal fishing. Many sport fishermen are outraged at these crooks.

Everyone thinks it doesn't effect them until they go fishing and wonder why they are not catching.
