PhatBass Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Was @ the outdoor show over in Oaks PA yesterday & picked up a Shimano Clarus rod & Symetre 2500FL reel. There was a small bag with some small washers in it. According to the manual they’re for “Adjusting Line Winding Shape”. Less washers to wind towards the front & more washers to wind towards the rear. The line roller seems to travel the entire spool with each wind so I have no idea how to determine the need to change or why I would want to change it from the factory setting. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Quote
adam32 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 You won't be able to tell until you spool it with line. If the line builds towards the top of the spool add a washer bottom of the spool remove a washer. There is no factory setting. These are just shims for you to get the line to lay even on the spool. They make it sound as if you are changing the line lay to your personal preference but it's just less work for reel manufacturers to let the customer do it once they buy the reel. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 1, 2015 Super User Posted March 1, 2015 I have never used the washer with any Shimano reel. Maybe someone else can offer a reason to use them. Quote
adam32 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I have never used the washer with any Shimano reel. Maybe someone else can offer a reason to use them. I've had to shim every shimano reel I've ever owned out of the box to get the line to lay even. Daiwas are usually ok out of the box but I've had to shim a few of mine. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 Great reel. You will not be disappointed. Have had my 2500 Symetre for about 7 seasons now. No problems, no worries. A real work horse of a reel. Of course, they've gone up in price since I bought mine, but all Shimano reels have. As far as those washers go, I have 5 Shimanos now, 2 Symetres and 3 Saharas, and have never had to add or subtract those washers with any of them. Quote
adam32 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I liked my symetre FI's and still use one of them. Didn't like my symetre fj's at all, nothing but issues with binding. I bought a new symetre FL a while back and hated it. The rotor was too close to my knuckles and it just didn't feel solid at all with the graphite frame compared to the older symetres that had the aluminum frame. Imo shimano really downgraded the symetre with the FL. 2 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 The extra shims I presume are intended to compensate for minor deviations in tolerance and maybe wear over time. Quote

Super User tomustang Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 On many shimanos I have used the shims for proper line placement. Usually when I switch out diameters or even when I first use the reel. That is the reason for them. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 I've had to shim every shimano reel I've ever owned out of the box to get the line to lay even. Daiwas are usually ok out of the box but I've had to shim a few of mine. I have 7 shims on 1 stradic and 5 on another, had to send a Daiwa tierra back to the factory for a line stacking problem. The initial spool ups were fine but in time I needed the shims. Shimming was the least of my problems with Shimano. Have never had to shim any other reel brand. Quote
0119 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Shimano's I've had that didn't need much help in the shimming dept. My Daiwa Ballistic hates to hold mono and its shims don't seem to make a difference but its fine with braid. The Daiwa Lexa's I've had never needed shimming and Ive never needed to shim a Quantum spinner either. The Abu Revo isnt picky either. My fishing buddy uses Pheluger exclusively and claims to never have trouble with line lay. But when I look at his spools I gasp in amazement at the mess they are and understand why he has so many loopy tangles go through his guides. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 There's also two size shims, a thin and thicker one. I've used all the shims on one reel before and some don't need any. Quote

Imo shimano really downgraded the symetre with the FL. I have never had to use the shims on shimano reels. I bought 3 newer model symetres last season (front drag). I absolutely loved the reel but ALL THREE were binding after 6 months of moderate use. They were cleaned, kept dry, used properly. Shimano did fix all of them free (I paid shipping) but once the same problem happens by the end of this season they won't be covered and I will be looking for a new reel. The fact that a $100 reel has a known issue and are only good for a short time is absurd. A reel at that price point I expect to last AT LEAST 2 seasons flawlessly. Don't get too worried though the issue may not be prevalent in all of them but it is a known issue with the line. I must have plucked 3 out of a good batch... That being said, they are amazingly light, perfect in size, and have a buttery smooth drag. Quote
