I'm looking to buy an St Croix Avid Spinning rod but am not sure whether to get a standard avid or the Avid X. What's the difference between the two rods besides the split grips? And which is better in your opinions? Im getting a medium fast action probably a 6'6. Using it for both largemouth and striper fishing.

I have never used the Avid X, but the standard model is a sweet rod. If you are going to get a medium power, I would recommend going with the 7'. I got the 6'6 and kinda with i had gotten the 7. Still an awesome rod though.

I just purchased a 6'6" MH avid today (not the split grip). The guy I was talking to at the local shop seemed like he knew his stuff, he was telling me that the split grip mayyyyyyybe might add some more sensitivity, maybe. But, as he explained, it's mainly just a newer and the more popular look. He told me to put both in my hands and whichever is more comfortable, buy. It was an easy decision for me, the split grip was too small in my hands and I was barely on any cork... I'd suggest trying them out and deciding that way.

Good luck!

P.s. The rod is sweet, very sweet lol.

i have a 7 m/f spinning avid x. Ive never used the standard avid, but I really do love both of the avid x's that I have. I also really like the micro guides.

The Avid and Avid X are built on the same blank. The difference between the two is the grip as well as the guides. The Avid is the more classic traditionally built rod that has the full grip as well as the tried and true full size guides. The Avid X is a sort of modern day recreation taking advantage of the latest in rod building technology. It features the split grip as well as Kigan Z micro guide platform. The stripper guides are elevated to increase efficiency of line flow.

I have the AV70MF and its hands down the best spinning rod I have ever owned.  I prefer the full cork grip though and standard guides since I usually use braid with a fluro leader.  The only difference that I know of between the standard and the x is the split grip and guides so it's really a matter of preference.  Such an awesome rod though.  I highly recommend them.  Also if you wanna use the rod for stripers I'd probably go with the 7 footer.  JMO...
