fishangdood Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Hey guys, this is my first post here. I've been a troller for quite some time now, so I guess here is start to my contribution. Anyways, since the freeze out, I've been on fleabay rebuilding ambassadeurs out of boredom. Now as far centrifugal braking goes, to me, it seems that the 6-pin, part # 1116727, brakes about the same as the 2-pin clutch washer assembly. I'm currently working on a 6.8 gear ratio conversion, from the new 5600 record, for my 4600 frankenstein. I'm thinking of installing the avail 4-point brake clutch washer and modifying the 6.8 pinion to fit the older clutch washers. I need some opinions. Thanks, Rio 'It's-cold-as-+i+$-outside-so-I'm-building-ambassadeurs' Lucero P.S. I own my share of low pros of from the current Revo Gen Series, but I just have and empty void in my fishing heart that only abu roundies can fulfill. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 1, 2015 Super User Posted March 1, 2015 Welcome. I've got 3 of the 1600C with upgraded drags ready to be put into all 3 and a set of upgraded bearings for one of them. My problem....besides not liking to tinker....is that I don't have a space of my own for tearing into reels. I read about all the possible upgrades and wish I had the skill to perform them.....provided I had a place to do the work. There is more play in the knobs than I like, so handles are one item I would like to change. Faster gears is another possibility. I'd like to try some different strength brakes although I have to say the ones already in the reels perform admirably for me.....since I am not a super caster. Light lures and strong winds are a breeze with these reels. Quote
fishangdood Posted March 1, 2015 Author Posted March 1, 2015 new2bc, First of all, thanks for the greeting and with three 1600c's, you're lucky. I'm this close to jumping the gun as far as selling some of my gen3 revo customs for some more 25/2600 or 15/1600s. I have a set installed on my 2500c IAR, but with the way Jun advertises, on Japan Tackle, to set the drag to 2 kg, is kind of discouraging. But then again, how much drag do I need for the average 2 lb bass around my nearby lakes. The avail shallow spools and matching mag brakes form Japan Tackle, make it hilariously easy to cast. It's almost like a spincaster for a beginner; it hits the water and almost no birdnest without the thumb to stop it and 100% loose spool tension knob. As far as faster gears go, I'm not sure which reel seats use the 5.1 gear ratio. I guess an e-mail to purefishing customer service is at hand, but I'll forewarn you that they'll never disclose if a certaing part will fit on another model. Anyways, I think the 5.1s are probably all you need with handles in the 75-85mm range; that should be perfect. Quote
Flukeman Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Hi guys, I have some 3600's and a 4600 I want to tweak. I was hoping you guys could suggest some reading on upgrades to the Abu reels to get me up to speed. I love tinkering! Thanks in advance, Quote

Thanks in advance, Check out the long thread on these reels in the Rods & Reels forum on bbcboaard. A fair amount of information there. Might even be a forum mentioned that is for Abu lovers. Can't remember if there is or not.....so no guarantee. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I've done some tinkering with a couple of my Ambassadeurs but it was at least a year ago now and I've forgotten most of what I read about them. Refresh my memory if you don't mind, what exactly has to be "modified" in order for the pinion to work with the Avail part? I'm thinking you'll be fine if all you need to do is widen the slots in the pinion to allow the Avail part to work properly. I thought of going this way with mine but instead just ended up using the "new style" plastic brake with 6 pins. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 U will need a 4 slot pinion for the 6 brakes and as long as its the same gear ratio.main gear can stay.this wont work on ultracast abus though Quote
fishangdood Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 War, Yeah, that sounds like the only route since there probably isn't a 2 slot version (6.8 is new to.the roundies, right) plus the pinion is available mainland than imported and is cheaper. I just feel like the brake blocks were better than the plastic 6-pin. Quote
fishangdood Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Maxximus, I know the 4 slot is needed for the 6 brake platstic snap on piece; I'm really just wondering if someone on here has used a pair of the Avail clutch washer with the 4 plastic blocks. Ordering an import part takes forever, and I hate it when I see the tracking # stuck on cusoms in NY for about three days. I might just order two sets if feedback is good. I could always e-mail JUN from Japantackle, but then again, a seller would show some bias towards purchasing. I've already switched my Ambassadeurs to 4 slot/ 6 brake conversions, but it maybe a good thing that I kept their 2-slot cousins. Quote
Josh Smith Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I'm fixing up a spool with the two plastic brake blocks to run in a 2014 5000c3. I won't get to finish it for a while yet. Been busy with a business I run. I have a feeling it will work just fine, but funny things come up. I don't know why the two or four brake block system would be better than the captive six system, though. The six captive blocks seem a bit cheaper, but I like the fact they're captive and not easily lost. (I love old Ambassadeurs but lose the fiber blocks all the time!) If you supertune the reel, you just should not need that much braking. Got a question for you: I'm seeing different colored brake blocks for the two plastic block system. I'm used to the three types of fiber blocks on the older Ambassadeurs and the captive blocks on the newest ones. Can I get different weights for the two plastic block system? My 5600 came with white blocks, but I'm seeing blue blocks for sale. Thanks, Josh Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 Blue white black all diff sizes i think blue is lightest and black the heaviest white is standard,i may be wrong 1 Quote
fishangdood Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Josh, I know for sure Dads Ole' Tackle has blocks for all three of the Ambassadeur centrifugal systems, I'd give him a buzz. He's got the ebay page and his webpage. His business number is 936-264-4167 (Texas time). I know for sure that they vary in weight, so he can confirm the weight order. The captive blocks, no matter clean and thinly oiled I get them, just seem to not slide as easily as the two block system. But yeah, those fiber blocks can get lost easy, so I'd say the two block system is somewhere in between. Heck, sometimes I forget to wedge the block on the captive six between two fingers, I've lost one already; one casualty to a light gray colored carpet (I thought deuce that, I got spares). Josh Smith Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Thanks guys! Dad's is someone I do business with a lot. I'll check with them. Regards, Josh Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I'm not certain about all the brake weights but I do know that the blue ones are the lightest. I ordered a set for my reel before I decided to go with the 6 pin but I never fished them so I have absolutely no idea of how much they actually effect the reels performance. I'm with you though in the feeling that the "older" style blocks perform better, I've not exactly been blown away by the 6 pin performance. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 A lot of people just chuck the brake shoes from the old two pin models. With the non-disengaging level wind spool speeds aren't all that fast anyway. A little thumb is all you need. Quote

fishangdood Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Jerry's prices are pretty competitive. Plus he ships fast. I've only ordered from hookless once, but I like his selling format- really organized and pain free to order. 1 Quote

tsmullins9 Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 I know this is an old post, but does anyone know the P/N to the four post brake block shown? Thanks Shane Quote
