Hi guys,

First off, this is a dumb question. Ive searched for the answer but cant locate it. I bought a 2003 Stratos 185 a couple of weeks ago. While plugging in the on board charger, I noticed a small amount of water near the battery trays. I went to pull the plug to drain it but Im unfamiliar with the type of plug this boat has. After researching it, I believe it is this one: http://www.thmarine.com/products/Aeration-and-Plumbing/Drain-Fittings/Transom-Drain-Plugs/Drain-Plug. Im used to twist and snap lock plugs.

My problem is this.... I cant get the plug to unscrew enough to let all of the water out. Ive unscrewed it about half a turn but it appears that It should come detached from the female end more than it is. I live in Tennessee and today has been the first day above freezing in about a week. I want to remove the plug but I dont want to break it. Does anyone out there have a similar plug that could lend some advice. Thanks in advance!

If it is a plastic one like in the pic, just keep unscrewing and it will come out.  It probably has 8-10 threads on it and is held in the boat with a T that will allow it to drop down when you get it unscrewed.

That is the issue though. The plug isnt unscrewing but just a small amount. Im not sure if its frozen or what.

Contact a Stratos dealer and ask for a mechanic.

I am sure there is a simple answer.

Just from looking, it appears that you might have to push on it at a certain point and then finish turning it.

If I was taking my best guess, there's probably a bit of ice left in the bottom of the boat. Those plugs have a piece of plastic that extends into the hull so when they are unscrewed they can just hang there and you won't lose it. If there's water left in the hull and it froze, it probably froze around the plastic in the hull so that would explain why it twists a little but not keep coming out like it's supposed to.

I have the same on in m Javelin.  I cut off the part that stays inside the boat.  It would hag up on my bilge plumbing and be difficult to get open.

WIGuide, you were correct. It finally warmed up to 50 yesterday. I got it to twist loose finally. It appeared as though the plastic that goes inside the hull was frozen inside the water that was left.

I would like to take that plug out and use a twist or snap style but Im going to go with the assumption that the adhesive is still holding strong.

Glad to hear you got it out! If you remove it every time you leave the ramp you shouldn't ever have that issue again. I wouldn't bother replacing it as it'd probably be more hassle than it's worth since it'd be a different size hole and I don't think they build in the metal sleeves for those type drain plugs in anymore. If you were going to replace it, I'd go this route https://www.flow-rite.com/products/marine/remote-drain-plug/mpa-rdp-006
